Paradip Port switches on shore power, marks major green shipping first
A Landmark Step in India’s Port Sustainability Journey
Paradip Port Authority (PPA) has achieved a major sustainability milestone by becoming the second major port in India to successfully commission a Shore-to-Ship Power Supply System capable of delivering full-load power to vessels while at berth. This development places Paradip firmly on India’s green port map and signals a strong commitment to low-carbon maritime operations.
Successful Live Demonstration at CB-1 Berth
The landmark operation was demonstrated at the CB-1 berth, where MV APJ INDRANI owned by Apeejay Shipping was seamlessly connected to the shore power facility. With a 77-year maritime legacy, Apeejay Shipping’s participation highlights the readiness of both port and vessel to adopt cleaner technologies. The successful integration confirms that Paradip Port can support ships equipped with shore power reception systems without operational disruption.
Cleaner Port Stays and Reduced Emissions
Shore power enables vessels to switch off auxiliary engines while alongside, significantly cutting fuel consumption, air emissions, and noise levels at the port. For Paradip, this translates into cleaner air for the port ecosystem, improved working conditions, and measurable progress toward decarbonisation aligning Indian ports with global environmental benchmarks.
Technology, Safety, and Operational Readiness
Commenting on the achievement, Shri P. L. Haranadh, Chairman, Paradip Port Authority, noted that the live monitoring systems and on-ground operations demonstrated the robustness, safety, and efficiency of the advanced installation. The commissioning reflects PPA’s focused approach toward energy-efficient infrastructure backed by reliable operational controls.
Engineering Excellence Behind the Milestone
The Port Authority acknowledged the critical contribution of its Electrical and Mechanical Engineering teams, whose coordinated efforts ensured timely and safe commissioning. Their work marks a key step toward pollution-free and low-carbon maritime operations at Paradip.
Paradip’s Role in India’s Green Port Transition
With shore power now operational, Paradip Port strengthens its position as a frontrunner in India’s green port transition. By enabling cleaner port stays and supporting environmentally compliant vessels, Paradip is actively helping the shipping industry move toward more sustainable and future-ready practices.
