Bariatric surgery results in more weight loss compared to GLP-1s, says new study after Carnie Wilson's ‘scary’ ordeal

Bariatric surgery results in more weight loss compared to GLP-1s, says new study after Carnie Wilson's ‘scary’ ordeal

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) recently published groundbreaking research showing that bariatric surgery leads to more significant and lasting weight loss compared to GLP-1 medications, such as Wegovy and Zepbound. The study also found that bariatric surgery offers lower long-term costs and improved metabolic outcomes. This revelation comes amid growing interest in pharmaceutical weight-loss solutions   and shortly after singer Carnie Wilson’s “very scary” medical ordeal involving her lap band removal.

Carnie Wilson’s Ordeal Highlights Surgical Risks

Carnie Wilson, 57, a member of the band Wilson Phillips, took to social media to share details of her frightening experience after surgeons removed her laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (lap band). Wilson, who had previously undergone gastric bypass surgery and later had the lap band inserted in 2012, revealed that doctors discovered an ulcer and an obstruction caused by food trapped inside the band.
“It was intense. They found an ulcer in there. It doesn't surprise me with all the stress I've had this year,” Wilson shared. “They actually found an obstruction with food inside the lap band … That makes me want to barf.”

Experts Explain Why Surgery Still Wins

According to Dr. Hector Perez, MD, lead bariatric surgeon at Renew Bariatrics’ Mexico headquarters, bariatric surgery remains the most effective method for sustained weight reduction.
“Gastric bypass is most suitable for treating diabetes and acid reflux, whereas sleeve gastrectomy is simpler and highly effective, though it may lead to worsened acid reflux,” he told Fox News Digital.

Perez explained that individuals who undergo gastric sleeve or bypass procedures typically lose between 25% and 35% of their total body weight and maintain most of it long-term.
“I’ve had patients come off insulin within 48 hours of surgery before they’ve even lost much weight,” Perez said. “GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound are fantastic tools and typically lead to 15% to 22% weight loss, but they only work while you stay on them   whereas surgery can deliver lasting change without lifelong injections.”

Complications and the Decline of Lap Bands

Perez also noted that lap bands have become outdated, describing them as “notorious for causing long-term irritation.”
“I spend more time removing them than placing them,” he admitted. “I’ve pulled out bands years later that literally eroded into the stomach wall like a zipper that slowly chewed through fabric.”

Similarly, Dr. Kurian, a bariatric expert, emphasized that while complications are possible in any surgery, such incidents are relatively rare. “Most of our patients do extremely well. The instance of complications with each of these procedures is fairly low long-term,” she said, addressing Wilson’s situation after 13 years of having the implant.

Surgery vs. GLP-1s: The Behavior Factor

While surgery may deliver more dramatic results, Dr. Brett Osborn, a Florida neurosurgeon and longevity expert, pointed out that it doesn’t eliminate the need for behavioral changes.
“Surgery doesn’t teach discipline. It just shrinks your stomach and hopes you comply with a post-op diet that most people don’t have the willpower to follow. That’s why the recidivism rate weight regain   is high,” Osborn said.

However, Osborn also highlighted the biological benefits of GLP-1 medications, noting that they “decrease hunger, increase satiety, and ultimately change behavior from the inside out.” Beyond weight loss, these drugs have been shown to lower the risk of dementia and offer cardiovascular protection.

“Yes, these drugs are expensive. Yes, they can cause GI side effects,” Osborn said, “but those are manageable with competent physician oversight and proper education.”

A Balanced Perspective

While GLP-1 medications are making headlines for their convenience and metabolic benefits, the latest JAMA research reinforces that bariatric surgery remains unmatched for achieving long-term weight loss and cost efficiency. Still, experts agree that no single solution fits all   success ultimately depends on lifestyle commitment, medical supervision, and individual health goals.
