On National Constitution Day, PM Narendra Modi says it 'gave me, others power to dream'
India celebrates National Constitution Day on November 26 each year, honouring the historic moment in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly adopted the nation’s guiding document. This year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the occasion with a heartfelt tribute to the Constitution and the visionary minds behind it, highlighting how it has empowered millions of Indians himself included to dream, aspire and achieve.
Constitution: A Document Upholding Dignity, Equality & Liberty
In his message, PM Modi described the Constitution as a text that “gives utmost importance to human dignity, equality and liberty.” He called upon citizens to renew their commitment to strengthening core constitutional values that continue to shape India’s democratic journey.
The Prime Minister also released a detailed letter reflecting on “the greatness of our Constitution,” emphasising how it has consistently guided India’s progress with clarity and steadfastness.
“Gave Me Power to Dream”: PM Modi on His Journey
One of the most powerful lines from PM Modi’s message was his personal reflection on how the Constitution shaped his rise from humble beginnings.
“It is the power of our Constitution that enabled a person like me, coming from a humble and economically disadvantaged family, to serve as the Head of the Government continuously for over 24 years,” he wrote.
Recalling his early days in Parliament, Modi said he still remembers the moment he first entered the Parliament building in 2014, bowing and touching its steps as a mark of deep respect. Again, in 2019, he placed the Constitution on his forehead in the Central Hall symbolic gestures he said came from heartfelt reverence.
“This Constitution has given several others, like me, the power to dream and the strength to work towards it,” he added, underscoring how the constitutional framework ensures opportunities for all.
Remembering the Makers of the Constitution
PM Modi paid rich tributes to the members of the Constituent Assembly, led by Dr. Rajendra Prasad. He highlighted the pivotal role of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, whose foresight shaped the drafting process. He also acknowledged the contributions of the distinguished women members who brought their visionary perspectives to nation-building.
Additionally, he honoured the legacy of freedom fighters such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagwan Birsa Munda, and Mahatma Gandhi, noting how their ideals continue to inspire India’s ongoing quest for social and economic progress.
A Special Year in India’s Constitutional Journey
PM Modi noted that this Constitution Day holds special significance as it marks the 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bhagwan Birsa Munda, as well as the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. This year also commemorates the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur, further deepening the sense of national pride and reflection.
Looking Ahead to a Viksit Bharat
Reflecting on India’s future, the Prime Minister reminded citizens that 25 years of the 21st century have already passed. With 2047 the centenary of India's independence approaching, and 2049 marking 100 years since the Constitution’s adoption, he stressed that decisions made today will shape the destiny of future generations.
He urged citizens to reaffirm their duties toward nation-building.
“In doing so, we can all contribute meaningfully to the building of a Viksit Bharat that is developed and empowered,” PM Modi concluded.
