India Imposes Ban on Pakistani Ships at Indian Ports Amid National Security Concerns

In a significant move following escalating tensions, India has imposed a comprehensive ban on Pakistani ships from entering Indian ports. The decision, announced by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), comes in the aftermath of a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and reflects India’s intensified focus on safeguarding national security and public infrastructure.

Immediate Restrictions on Maritime Operations

The DGS has issued a directive stating that any ship flying the Pakistani flag will no longer be allowed to dock at any Indian port. Furthermore, Indian-flagged vessels are now prohibited from calling at any port in Pakistan. This directive, effective immediately, aims to shield Indian shipping interests, cargo, and critical infrastructure from potential threats.

The statement emphasizes that these restrictions are put in place in the interest of public safety and Indian shipping, and will remain in force until further notice. While the order is stringent, the DGS clarified that any requests for exemptions will be reviewed case-by-case, offering a narrow scope for exceptions if justified under exceptional circumstances.

Wider Trade and Communication Crackdown

In parallel with the shipping restrictions, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has announced a complete ban on the direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan. The move underscores India’s uncompromising stance in matters of national security and public policy. As per the DGFT, no such goods will be permitted to enter Indian territory unless explicitly approved by the government.

Adding to the list of escalated measures, India has also suspended all postal services to and from Pakistan, severing another link between the two countries. These actions follow a series of prior steps that include:
