According to officials, TVK had sought permission for a gathering of 10,000 people, but police estimated the turnout to be more than double that figure. "The scale of the crowd was far beyond expectations," said senior police official V Selvaraj, who confirmed that cases have been filed against three senior TVK party members for potential charges including homicide and negligent conduct.

Chief Minister Stalin announced a compensation of one million rupees ($11,300; £8,400) to each family of the deceased and ordered a formal inquiry into the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, describing the tragedy as “unfortunate” and “deeply saddening” in a post on X.
