Waltair railway division posts record growth in freight

The Waltair Division of Indian Railways has achieved a historic milestone, recording its best-ever performance in the first half of the 2025–26 financial year. With remarkable gains across freight, operational efficiency, and passenger services, the division’s performance highlights India’s growing capability in managing high-volume rail logistics and providing enhanced passenger experiences.
Freight Performance Hits New Highs
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Lalit Bohra reported outstanding results between April and September 2025. Daily freight loading rose by 10.78%, while freight earnings increased by 12.18% compared to the same period last year. Overall divisional loading surged by 10.9% over FY 2023–24.
A key driver of this growth was iron ore movement, with KRDL–BCHL iron ore loading reaching 12.79 million tonnes, marking a 21.69% rise. The division achieved a cumulative loading of 39.18 million tonnes year-to-date. Long-haul operations also showed strength, with 905 trains formed and network utilisation climbing to 23,711 million NTKM, a 9.64% increase. Iron ore alone contributed an additional ₹800 crore in freight revenue, a 20.68% jump from the previous year.
Passenger Services and Modernisation
The Waltair Division is not just focused on freight. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 15 stations are being modernised with upgraded amenities such as climate-controlled waiting halls, baby feeding rooms, premium lounges, and enhanced platform connectivity.
Between April and September, 121 special trains were operated, serving over 1.5 lakh passengers, with more than 3,300 additional coaches deployed to meet peak festive travel demand. Passenger revenue reached an all-time high of ₹426 crore, reflecting the division’s commitment to comfort and efficiency.
Safety and Technology Initiatives
Safety remains a top priority for Waltair Division. Surveillance has been enhanced through CCTV networks, drone monitoring, and body-worn cameras for Railway Protection Force personnel. Social and safety initiatives such as Meri Saheli, Nanhe Fariste, and Mission Narcotics further reinforce passenger welfare.
Modern passenger facilities, including digital ticketing counters, multilingual information systems, and dedicated assistance desks, have strengthened station infrastructure, making travel smoother and more accessible for passengers.
Looking Ahead
With a strong focus on operational excellence, safety, and passenger experience, the Waltair Division sets a benchmark for other railway zones. Its record-breaking freight growth, coupled with modernised passenger facilities, reflects a strategic approach to sustainable development in India’s railway sector.
