VOC Port Unveils Digital Twin Project, Becomes India’s First Port to Produce and Use Green Hydrogen

Introduction
V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port), Tuticorin, has taken a major leap toward next-generation maritime infrastructure with the launch of two pathbreaking initiatives. These developments not only strengthen the port’s operational capabilities but also accelerate India’s transition toward sustainable and technologically advanced port operations.

Digital Twin Project Launched
In a significant digital transformation push, VOC Port has introduced its Digital Twin project, an advanced system that creates a virtual replica of the port’s physical assets, systems, and operational workflows. This innovative platform will allow authorities to monitor real-time activities, analyze data predictively, and make faster, more informed decisions. By enhancing operational efficiency, improving safety, and boosting overall productivity, the Digital Twin is set to redefine how port operations are managed in India.
The project, scheduled for completion by March 2026, is expected to be a major cornerstone in VOC Port’s journey towards becoming a fully smart, data-driven, and technology-enabled port.

India’s First Port to Produce and Use Green Hydrogen
Reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, VOC Port has created history by becoming the first port in India to produce and use green hydrogen within its own campus. This green energy breakthrough marks a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of decarbonized maritime operations.
The initiative will drastically reduce carbon emissions from port activities by replacing conventional fuels with clean, renewable hydrogen energy. This pioneering move aligns closely with the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, aimed at promoting energy security and advancing clean energy solutions across sectors.

Building a Low-Carbon Port Ecosystem
The on-site production and utilization of green hydrogen play a crucial role in VOC Port’s effort to develop a future-ready, low-carbon ecosystem. This shift to clean energy not only strengthens environmental sustainability but also sets a benchmark for other ports across the country. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels, VOC Port is actively contributing to national climate goals and strengthening the maritime sector’s move toward net-zero emissions.

A Model for Innovation and Sustainability
With the twin advancements of digital transformation and green energy leadership, VOC Port is emerging as a national model for modern maritime excellence. The combination of predictive insights through the Digital Twin and cleaner port operations through green hydrogen positions VOC Port at the forefront of India’s maritime innovation.
These initiatives underline the port’s long-term vision of integrating technology, sustainability, and operational excellence paving the way for a smarter, greener, and more resilient future for India’s ports.
