Starlink Plans Yet To Be Out In India, A Look At Pricing In Other Nations

Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, has inched closer to launching commercial services in India. The company recently secured a crucial licence from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), making it the third player after Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications to receive such approval. With this move, Starlink is expected to begin operations in the country within the next 12 months, offering an estimated bandwidth capacity of 600 to 700 Gbps.
Awaiting Indian Rollout
Despite receiving the DoT's nod, Starlink's pricing for India is still under wraps. This leaves potential customers and tech enthusiasts speculating on its cost structure. Notably, India is among the countries with the lowest data prices globally. A 2022 estimate by former Starlink India Country Director Sanjay Bhargava suggested that the first-year cost per connection could be around ₹1.58 lakh, dropping to ₹1.15 lakh from the second year onward. However, this projection might vary once Starlink officially announces its tariffs.
A Limited Footprint in South Asia
Interestingly, none of India’s neighbouring countries except Bhutan and Bangladesh currently have access to Starlink's services. In Bhutan, Starlink’s Residential Lite Plan is priced at around ₹3,000, and the Standard Residential Plan at ₹4,200. Bangladesh offers similar pricing, with the Lite plan at ₹3,000 and the Residential plan at ₹4,000. This suggests that if introduced in India, Starlink may adopt a competitive pricing model for the region.

What Lies Ahead for India?
With Starlink stepping closer to its Indian debut, the satellite internet landscape is set for a major transformation. Whether it chooses to position itself as a premium service for remote and underserved regions or becomes a mainstream alternative to terrestrial internet providers remains to be seen. Given India’s unique digital environment and pricing sensitivity, Starlink’s local strategy will be key to its success.
