Google launches AI Mode for Search in India

In a major step forward in the evolution of online search, Google has officially launched its AI-powered Search feature in India, expanding its reach beyond the limited group of early testers. Originally announced in May by Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and, this new AI Mode promises to redefine how users interact with Search by offering deeper reasoning capabilities, multimodal inputs, and smarter follow-up questions.
Powered by Gemini 2.5
At the core of this innovation lies a custom version of Gemini 2.5, Google's advanced AI model. This allows users to input longer, more complex, and nuanced queries the kind that would have typically required several separate searches. According to Google, this makes it easier to explore detailed topics, compare products, plan trips, and understand intricate instructions.
“Using a custom version of Gemini 2.5 lets you ask longer, more complex or nuanced questions that would have previously required multiple searches,” says Google.
Multimodal and Voice-Friendly
One of the standout features of this AI Mode is its support for multimodal input. Users can now ask questions not only by typing, but also through voice commands or photo uploads. This is especially useful in everyday scenarios where describing an object visually or asking something on-the-go enhances the overall search experience.
Designed for Complex Information Needs
Early users of the feature have noted that their queries were two to three times longer than traditional searches. This proves extremely beneficial for handling exploratory tasks, such as researching travel itineraries or analyzing the pros and cons of various products.
Available Through Google Labs
To access this cutting-edge feature, users need to sign up via Google Labs and activate AI Mode in Google Search. Once enabled, AI-powered results will appear wherever the system has high confidence in the answer. In cases of uncertainty, users will still be provided with traditional web search results to maintain reliability.
“We aim to show an AI-powered response as much as possible, but in cases where we don't have high confidence, you will see a set of web search results,” Google clarified.
Shaping the Future of Search
Google sees this launch as more than just a feature it’s part of a larger mission to simplify information access through Search. With the rising complexity of user queries, AI Mode stands as a pivotal solution for helping people get meaningful, contextual answers faster and more intuitively than ever before.
