PM Modi to Inaugurate ₹3,000-Crore Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge Over Brahmaputra in Assam
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the ₹3,000-crore Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge over the mighty Brahmaputra River, marking a transformative milestone in Assam’s infrastructure development. The much-anticipated project strengthens connectivity between Guwahati and North Guwahati, reinforcing the state’s long-term transportation vision.
Introduction
The 1.24-km, six-lane bridge stands as a symbol of modern engineering excellence and regional progress. Constructed across one of India’s most challenging riverine terrains, the project reflects the Centre and State’s commitment to enhancing mobility, trade, and urban expansion in the Northeast.
Engineering Excellence: Northeast’s First Extradosed Bridge
Designed as an extradosed bridge the first of its kind in Northeast India the structure blends the strength of a cable-stayed system with the simplicity of a girder bridge. Unlike traditional suspension bridges, the extradosed design offers optimal structural performance across the Brahmaputra’s vast and dynamic span while ensuring faster execution timelines.
The bridge’s design enhances durability, safety, and load-bearing capacity, making it a significant engineering achievement in the region. Building across the Brahmaputra required extensive planning, coordination, and technical precision due to fluctuating water levels, strong currents, and complex soil conditions.
Execution and Project Leadership
According to Rohit Singla, Director of SPS Construction India, the bridge represents a key addition to Assam’s long-term transport infrastructure.
“Our role, as the executing agency, was to translate that vision into a durable, safe, and functional structure. We are grateful for the guidance and cooperation of the authorities throughout the project lifecycle, and we believe the bridge will serve the region’s mobility needs for many years to come,” he stated.
Construction activities were closely monitored by authorities to ensure strict adherence to safety, quality, and environmental standards at every stage.
Boost to Connectivity and Mobility
Officials have highlighted that the bridge will significantly reduce travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati, easing traffic congestion across existing routes. The improved corridor will facilitate smoother movement for:
• Daily commuters
• Freight and cargo vehicles
• Long-distance travellers
By linking key transport corridors, the project aligns with Assam’s broader infrastructure roadmap and strengthens the region’s logistical network.
Catalyst for Urban and Economic Growth
A senior state government official noted that the bridge will improve accessibility to several national institutions and cultural landmarks located in North Guwahati. Importantly, the project supports plans to develop North Guwahati as a twin city, accelerating urban expansion and economic growth in the state capital region.
The enhanced connectivity is expected to attract investments, promote trade, and improve overall ease of movement reinforcing Assam’s position as a gateway to the Northeast.
Strengthening the Northeast’s Transport Backbone
With the commissioning of the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge, Assam takes a significant step forward in modernizing its transport backbone. Beyond being a vital infrastructure asset, the bridge symbolizes resilience, innovation, and a forward-looking development agenda for the region.
As the bridge opens to the public, it not only connects two banks of the Brahmaputra but also bridges opportunities for growth, integration, and long-term prosperity across Northeast India.
