PM Modi Launches Mega Schemes to Boost Agricultural Productivity in 100 Low-Performing Districts, Strengthen Pulse Production
In a major push toward strengthening India’s agricultural sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched two flagship central schemes designed to transform 100 low-performing agricultural districts and enhance the nation’s pulse production capacity. The combined financial outlay of these initiatives stands at an impressive ₹35,440 crore.
Focus on Self-Reliance and Global Competitiveness
Speaking at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, PM Modi emphasized that India’s agricultural strategy must aim for both self-sufficiency and global leadership. “On one hand, we will have to be self-sufficient, while on the other hand, we will have to produce for the global market. We have to focus on those crops which can dominate the world agri market,” he remarked.
Two Major Schemes Announced
The newly unveiled initiatives include:
PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana – With an allocation of ₹24,000 crore, this program targets 100 low-productivity districts across the country. The scheme aims to boost agricultural output through enhanced irrigation coverage, crop diversification, and better access to technology and credit.
Mission for Self-Sufficiency in Pulses – Allocated ₹11,440 crore, this mission is designed to increase domestic pulse production and significantly reduce India’s dependence on imports, thereby ensuring food security and stabilizing market prices.
Both schemes will be rolled out from the upcoming rabi (winter sowing) season and are scheduled to continue through 2030–31.
Districts Identified for Focused Development
Under the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, the 100 identified districts span multiple states, with Uttar Pradesh leading with 12 districts, followed by Maharashtra (9), Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan (8 each), Bihar (7), Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and West Bengal (4 each), Assam, Kerala, and Chhattisgarh (3 each), and Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir (2 each).
“These districts were selected based on low productivity, moderate crop intensity, and below-average access to credit,” PM Modi explained. He further highlighted that 36 schemes across 11 central departments will be converged under the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana for integrated agricultural development.
Comprehensive Push for Rural Transformation
During the event, PM Modi also virtually inaugurated 1,054 completed projects worth over ₹5,450 crore and laid the foundation stones for 50 new projects valued at around ₹815 crore. These projects cover sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and food processing, marking a holistic approach to rural and agrarian growth.
A Call to Farmers for Nation-Building
Concluding his address, PM Modi urged farmers to take the lead in building a self-reliant and developed India. “Our farmers are the backbone of our nation’s progress. Together, we can ensure food security, strengthen our economy, and make India a global agricultural powerhouse,” he said.
These ambitious schemes not only aim to revitalize underperforming regions but also reinforce the government’s long-term vision of achieving sustainable agricultural growth, reducing import dependency, and empowering India’s rural economy.
