Patna is on the cusp of a transformative journey as it prepares to become the nucleus of India’s inland waterways network. With ambitious infrastructure projects in the pipeline, the city is poised to revolutionize regional connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and emerge as a model for sustainable transport development. Spearheaded by the Government of India, these initiatives are set to make the most of the Ganga River also known as National Waterway-1 by turning it into a vibrant and efficient corridor for goods and passenger movement.

Ship Repair Facility to Boost Maritime Industry

A pivotal component of this development is the establishment of a state-of-the-art ship repair facility in Patna. This infrastructure will not only maintain and service existing vessels but also support the construction of new ships. As a result, it will act as a catalyst for local maritime industry growth, fostering skill development and generating employment opportunities in the region.

Expanding River Access through Community Jetties

To ensure better river access and expand the reach of water-based transport, the government plans to build 16 new community jetties across Bihar. These strategically located jetties will serve as essential nodes for passenger and cargo movement, connecting remote and underserved areas with larger economic centers and promoting inclusive regional development.

Enhancing Passenger Experience with Modern Facilities

In a bid to streamline ferry services and reduce waiting times, the deployment of Quick Pontoon Opening Mechanisms (QPOMs) at four locations is underway. Additionally, two new Ro-Pax terminals will be constructed, making it easier and faster for people and vehicles to traverse the river. These modern facilities will enhance the overall passenger experience and further encourage the use of inland waterways.

Green Transport with Hybrid Electric Vessels

In line with the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability, hybrid electric catamaran vessels will soon navigate the Ganga. These vessels offer a greener, quieter, and more cost-effective mode of transport, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of inland navigation and promoting eco-friendly mobility solutions.

Strategic Collaboration for Sustainable Development

A Joint Task Force, comprising the Bihar Government, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), will be set up to oversee the effective execution of these initiatives. The task force will explore sustainable development opportunities along the Ganga River, ensuring coordinated planning and policy alignment for long-term success.

NINI Patna to Become a Centre of Excellence

The National Inland Navigation Institute (NINI) in Patna will also receive a significant upgrade to become a Centre of Excellence. This transformation will enable cutting-edge research, innovation, and skill development in the inland waterways sector, equipping the next generation of professionals with the expertise to drive progress.

Towards a Greener and More Efficient Future

These developments are part of a larger national effort to revive and modernize India’s inland water transport system. Since 2014, cargo movement on national waterways has surged by over 700%, with operational waterways expanding nearly nine times. As the focus shifts towards inland navigation, road and rail congestion is expected to ease, logistics costs will decrease, and a cleaner, more sustainable transportation ecosystem will take shape.
