Nagpur Set for Major Infrastructure Overhaul to Become India’s Logistics Hub

Nagpur is on the cusp of a major transformation as large-scale infrastructure projects aim to redefine the city as a central pillar of India’s logistics ecosystem. With investments exceeding Rs 1,600 crore, the city is preparing for an overhaul that blends urban modernization with freight and industrial connectivity.

Strategic Investment in Road Infrastructure
Projects worth over Rs 1,600 crore are currently underway to develop a continuous service road along Nagpur’s ring road. Announced by Nitin Gadkari, this initiative is designed to reduce urban congestion while ensuring smoother movement of freight and passenger traffic. The improved road network will strengthen last-mile connectivity and support large-scale logistics operations around the city.

Nagpur’s Natural Advantage as a Logistics Center
Speaking at the “Logistics Talent for Tomorrow” seminar organized by Confederation of Indian Industry, Gadkari highlighted Nagpur’s geographical strength. Most major Indian cities are accessible within 1.5 to 2 hours by air, giving Nagpur a unique advantage as a national distribution, warehousing, and consolidation hub. This central location positions the city to efficiently serve pan-India supply chains.

Development of Logistics Parks and Transport Hubs
To fully leverage this advantage, logistics parks are proposed at all four corners of Nagpur. In addition, large Transport Nagars are being planned along the city’s outer fringes. These hubs will help decongest the urban core while creating dedicated zones for freight movement, vehicle parking, and logistics services. The Sindi dry port–Butibori corridor is also being prioritized as a key industrial and freight movement axis.

Urban Restructuring for Better Traffic Flow
Alongside logistics-focused projects, several urban restructuring initiatives are in progress. The central jail is set to be relocated, and redevelopment tenders for the Cotton Market and Santra Market are expected soon. Land acquisition has already begun for the four-laning of the Mayo Hospital–Shaheed Chowk stretch, which will significantly improve traffic flow in one of the city’s busiest areas.

Modernizing Trade and Wholesale Infrastructure
To ease congestion in crowded commercial zones, godowns and wholesale markets, including the Kirana Market, are planned to be shifted to Kalamana. This move will create organized, modern trading spaces while improving accessibility for transporters and traders. It also aligns with the broader goal of integrating urban planning with logistics efficiency.

A Key Node in India’s Logistics Future
With coordinated investments in roads, logistics parks, transport hubs, and urban redevelopment, Nagpur is steadily being positioned as a vital node in India’s logistics network. The city’s transformation reflects a long-term vision that combines infrastructure development, industrial growth, and seamless freight connectivity, setting the foundation for Nagpur to emerge as India’s logistics capital.
