Mumbai Samruddhi expressway fully opens June 6

Maharashtra is poised to witness a historic leap in infrastructure development as the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg one of the state’s most ambitious projects becomes fully operational on June 6, 2025. Spanning an impressive 701 kilometers, this expressway connects Nagpur to the outskirts of Mumbai, significantly slashing travel time, improving safety, and ushering in transformative changes for both regional and economic development.
A Flagship Project Reaches the Finish Line
The completion of the final phase marks a momentous occasion for Maharashtra. This crucial stretch, traversing the Kasara Ghat, has been constructed at a cost of ₹1,182 crore by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Known for its treacherous, winding roads and frequent traffic snarls, the Kasara Ghat section now promises a drastically improved commute reducing travel time from over 90 minutes to just 30-40 minutes.
Boost to Travel and Trade
With the entire expressway open, the Nagpur to Thane journey can now be completed in approximately eight hours, nearly halving the previous travel time. This will have far-reaching benefits for millions of commuters, transporters, and logistics operations, offering faster, safer, and more efficient connectivity.
Importantly, the Samruddhi Mahamarg enhances access to key economic hubs, notably the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), reinforcing Maharashtra's role as a logistics powerhouse.
Strategic Interconnections Underway
Although the expressway is physically complete, full access for Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai residents is still restricted due to the ongoing construction of the Vadpe interchange. This strategic connector is designed to integrate the Samruddhi Mahamarg with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the national highway network, further streamlining access to JNPT and beyond. The Vadpe interchange is expected to be fully operational by mid-2026.
Until then, vehicles heading to Mumbai will utilize a temporary route near Shangrila Resort on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, close to Bhiwandi. While this interim solution may require some adjustment, it is a necessary safety measure during the final integration phase.
Plans for Broader Regional Access
Looking to the future, the state government has ambitious plans to develop additional interchanges connecting the expressway to Kalyan, Dombivli, Badlapur, Vasai, Virar, Panvel, and Navi Mumbai. These extensions will further distribute the economic and connectivity benefits of the Samruddhi Mahamarg to a broader segment of the population.
Supporting Infrastructure Improvements
Complementary efforts are also underway to expand the 21.6-kilometre stretch of the Mumbai-Nashik Highway from Vadpe to Majiwada, increasing it from four to eight lanes. This upgrade is designed to ease traffic congestion, especially from heavy commercial vehicles, and reduce road wear and emissions in the region.
A Milestone Moment
The grand opening ceremony, to be attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar, underscores the importance of this expressway in Maharashtra’s development narrative. The Samruddhi Mahamarg is more than just a road it is a vital economic artery, promising to reshape the state's infrastructure landscape for decades to come.
