Mangaluru water metro project receives CM’s approval

The coastal city of Mangaluru is all set to witness a transformation in its public transport landscape with the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, approving the much-anticipated Mangaluru Water Metro Project. In a high-level meeting focused on enhancing inland transport, the green signal for this innovative project marks a major step towards sustainable and efficient connectivity in the state.
Linking Communities Across Rivers
The proposed water metro will connect Bajal to Maravoor, seamlessly linking both banks of the Netravati and Gurupura rivers. Once completed, it will emerge as India’s second-largest water transport system after Kochi, significantly easing congestion on roadways while promoting eco-friendly transit solutions.
Development Under Karnataka Maritime Board
The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has been entrusted with the responsibility to oversee the development of the project. The board has been instructed to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) to outline the technical, financial, and operational aspects. The CM’s approval also included the launch of a Karnataka Water Transport Training Centre in Mangaluru under the Central Government’s Sagarmala initiative, which aims to enhance port-led development in the country.
A Broader Vision for Maritime Growth
During the same meeting, discussions extended beyond just the water metro. Senior officials reviewed the state’s port development plans, progress of water transport projects, and the infrastructure needed for cargo movement. Recognizing the importance of sustainable growth, the Chief Minister instructed the review of land allocation policies for ports and rehabilitation schemes, emphasizing the need for swift action on removing encroachments.
Drone Survey and Learning from Other States
The CM directed the Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner to carry out a drone survey for the holistic development of islands in the district, with a submission timeline of three months. He also urged officials to study the functioning of ports in Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat, to adopt best practices and ensure the success of the Mangaluru water metro.
Moving Forward with Full Support
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured complete state-level support for the Mangaluru Water Metro Project, signaling the government's commitment to revamping water-based transport systems. With the Karnataka Maritime Board at the helm and strategic guidance from the government, this project promises to redefine the way people and goods move in the region.
