₹230 crore worth of projects launched at Visakhapatnam Port to boost capacity and infrastructure
Introduction
India’s maritime infrastructure received a significant boost with the launch of ₹230 crore worth of projects at Visakhapatnam Port Authority. These projects are aimed at strengthening operational capacity, safety systems, administrative infrastructure, and residential facilities, positioning the port for future growth and higher cargo throughput.
Foundation stone laid for major projects
The foundation stone for four major infrastructure projects was laid by Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The ceremony took place at Sagaramala Conventions in Saligrampuram, Visakhapatnam, and marked a key milestone in the port’s ongoing modernisation journey.
Speaking at the event, the Minister highlighted that Visakhapatnam Port is well positioned to cross 100 million metric tonnes of cargo throughput in the coming years. He described the port as one of India’s top-performing maritime gateways and noted that it features among the world’s top 100 ports, reflecting its growing global stature and strategic importance in international trade.
Focus on safety, efficiency and future readiness
Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, M. Angamuthu, stated that the newly launched projects are designed to strengthen safety mechanisms, enhance operational and administrative infrastructure, and improve residential amenities. These initiatives align with the port’s long-term growth plans and future cargo handling requirements.
Upgradation of firefighting facilities at LPG berth
One of the most critical projects involves the upgradation of firefighting facilities at the LPG berth at an estimated cost of ₹52.23 crore. This initiative is being undertaken to comply with Oil Industry Safety Directorate norms, significantly enhancing safety standards and risk management at the port’s LPG handling facilities.
Modernisation of ORS Dry Dock
Another key project is the modernisation of the ORS Dry Dock, with an investment of ₹35.87 crore. This upgrade is expected to enhance ship repair and maintenance capabilities, reduce turnaround time for vessels, and generate additional revenue streams for the port by attracting more repair-related business.
Green administrative infrastructure
The port will also construct a G+9 Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Administrative Bhavan at a cost of ₹97.70 crore. Designed in line with green building standards, the new administrative complex will provide modern office infrastructure while supporting sustainability goals through energy-efficient and environmentally responsible design.
Residential development at Harbour Park
As part of its land monetisation and welfare initiatives, the port will develop residential apartments at Harbour Park with an investment of ₹44.20 crore. This project aims to improve housing facilities for port-related stakeholders while optimising land use and generating long-term value.
Support from local representatives
Visakhapatnam South MLA Vamsikrishna Srinivas Yadav noted that the city’s rapid industrial growth is emerging as a strong catalyst for regional development. Visakhapatnam North MLA Vishnukumar Raju highlighted the port’s corporate social responsibility initiatives and their positive impact on underserved communities in and around the city.
Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat emphasised the port’s long-standing contribution to the city’s economic development and expressed confidence that the newly launched projects would be completed on schedule, delivering benefits to all stakeholders.
Skill development and maritime workforce empowerment
Following the foundation-laying ceremony, the Union Minister presented course completion certificates and placement orders to students trained at the Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding. Supported by the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, this programme focuses on developing skilled manpower for the maritime and shipbuilding sectors, ensuring that infrastructure growth is complemented by a capable and future-ready workforce.
Conclusion
The launch of ₹230 crore worth of projects marks a major step forward for Visakhapatnam Port’s transformation into a safer, more efficient, and globally competitive maritime hub. With enhanced safety systems, modernised ship repair facilities, sustainable administrative infrastructure, improved residential amenities, and a strong focus on skill development, the port is well positioned to drive regional growth and strengthen India’s maritime ecosystem in the years ahead.
