Google Launches Gemini-Powered “Search Live” in AI Mode: Here's How It Works

Google has officially taken the next big leap in AI-powered search with the launch of Search Live, a voice-activated feature that transforms the way users interact with Google Search. Designed for conversational, hands-free experiences, this new functionality is powered by Gemini, a custom-built AI model that enables dynamic, back-and-forth dialogue right within the Google mobile app.

How Does Search Live Work?

Search Live allows users to speak directly to Google Search instead of typing their queries. Once the app is updated, users in the United States who have opted into the AI Mode experiment via Labs can tap the newly added "Live" icon in the Google app. From there, users can simply ask their questions out loud.

The AI then provides audio responses generated in real time, along with relevant web links displayed on screen. The magic lies in its continuous conversation flow   users don’t have to rephrase or restart their search to follow up on earlier queries. For instance, someone might ask for packing tips for a trip and follow up naturally with a question about how to avoid wrinkles in clothes or organize toiletries.

Seamless Multitasking with Background Conversations

One of the standout features of Search Live is its ability to run in the background, allowing users to continue conversations even while using other apps. This makes it ideal for multitasking   whether you're cooking, driving, or working. There’s also a transcript button that lets users toggle between spoken and typed responses, offering greater flexibility for those on the go.

Combining Google's Strength with Conversational AI

Search Live blends Google’s trusted search infrastructure with advanced voice technology, ensuring accuracy while enabling natural language interactions. The system uses Google’s "query fan-out technique" to retrieve diverse and authoritative web content. However, this raises a potential concern: since the AI often provides complete answers within the app, users may be less likely to click through to the original content sources.

What's Next: Visual Search Integration

At Google I/O, the company teased an upcoming expansion of Search Live with camera-based capabilities. This enhancement will allow users to maintain voice conversations while showing the system real-time visuals, such as complex math problems or physical objects. The goal is to make search even more interactive and helpful across real-world scenarios.

Final Thoughts

Search Live is a major step forward in making search more interactive, intelligent, and user-friendly, especially for multitaskers or users seeking a hands-free experience. As Google continues to blend AI with everyday tools, it’s reshaping how we discover and interact with information.
