First Made-in-India semiconductor chip to roll out soon, Ashwini Vaishnaw says

India is on the brink of a historic technological leap, as Union IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the first Made-in-India semiconductor chip will soon be rolled out. This development marks a defining moment in the country’s ambition to become self-reliant in electronics manufacturing and to establish a robust semiconductor supply chain for the world’s fourth-largest economy.

A Major Milestone in India’s Semiconductor Mission

Speaking at the inauguration of CG Semi Pvt. Ltd.’s Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, Vaishnaw said,

“The pilot line was inaugurated today, and very soon, the chip produced from this pilot line will be dedicated to the nation by the prime minister. This is a major milestone in our country’s semiconductor journey.”

This achievement is part of India’s Semiconductor Mission, which has approved 10 semiconductor projects across six states, attracting investments worth ₹1.6 lakh crore.

CG Power’s OSAT Facility in Sanand

The Sanand project is being spearheaded by CG Power and Industrial Solutions Ltd., in collaboration with Renesas Electronics America Inc. and Stars Microelectronics (Thailand) Public Co. Ltd.

  • Total investment: ₹7,600 crore

  • Facility type: OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) unit

  • Location: Sanand, Gujarat

This unit represents India’s growing capability to establish end-to-end chip manufacturing and testing facilities within its borders.

Ongoing Projects Across India

Vaishnaw highlighted the progress of other semiconductor initiatives:

  • Micron’s plant in Sanand – construction progressing rapidly.

  • Kaynes Technology’s project – moving forward at pace.

  • Tata Electronics – setting up a semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, and another unit in Morigaon, Assam.

Earlier this month, the government also approved four more semiconductor projects:

  • Two in Odisha

  • One in Andhra Pradesh

  • One in Punjab

These new projects alone will bring in ₹4,600 crore investment, creating 2,034 direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities.

Chipmaking Overdrive: India’s Roadmap

  • June 2023: The first proposal for Sanand’s semiconductor unit was approved.

  • By February 2024: Three more semiconductor projects were cleared.

  • Now: Four semiconductor projects are under construction with a total investment of ₹1.5 lakh crore and a projected cumulative capacity of seven crore chips per day.

This rapid pace reflects the government’s clear commitment to making India a global semiconductor hub.

A Dream in the Making

The semiconductor mission is not just about producing chips; it is about securing India’s future in critical technologies, reducing dependence on imports, and strengthening global competitiveness. As Vaishnaw remarked,

“Out of the 10 projects that we have approved in the semiconductor mission, I am very happy to report to all that this is a dream getting fulfilled.”

With India preparing to dedicate its first indigenous chip to the nation, the semiconductor revolution is officially underway   bringing the country closer to its vision of becoming a global leader in electronics manufacturing.
