Dhamra Port Receives First Capesize Limestone Vessel at Newly Built Berth
Dhamra Port Company Limited (DPCL) has achieved a major operational milestone by successfully receiving its first Capesize limestone vessel at a newly developed berth on March 9, 2026. The development marks a significant step forward in the port’s infrastructure expansion and highlights its ability to efficiently handle some of the largest cargo vessels operating in global maritime trade.
The vessel, MV VEGA DREAM, arrived carrying an impressive 158,603 metric tonnes of limestone with a draft of 17.14 metres. The successful berthing of such a large Capesize vessel demonstrates the port’s enhanced capability to manage deep-draft vessels and large-volume bulk cargo shipments with improved operational efficiency.
Strengthening Infrastructure for Large Vessels
The arrival of MV VEGA DREAM at the newly constructed berth reflects Dhamra Port’s growing infrastructure and modernization efforts. The berth has been specifically designed to accommodate larger vessels and higher cargo volumes, enabling faster turnaround times and more efficient cargo handling operations.
Handling Capesize vessels represents a major advantage for ports involved in bulk cargo trade. These vessels are among the largest bulk carriers in the world and are capable of transporting massive quantities of raw materials such as limestone, coal, and iron ore in a single shipment.
Improved Logistics and Cost Efficiency
The capability to handle Capesize vessels allows Dhamra Port to significantly increase cargo movement efficiency. By transporting larger quantities of cargo in one shipment, customers benefit from greater economies of scale and reduced logistics costs.
For industries such as steel, cement, and manufacturing, which depend heavily on bulk imports like limestone, this development ensures more reliable and cost-effective supply chains. The improved infrastructure is expected to support a steady flow of similar large limestone shipments in the future, strengthening the port’s role in industrial logistics.
Supporting India’s Growing Industrial Demand
The milestone reflects Dhamra Port Company Limited’s ongoing investments in infrastructure upgrades aimed at boosting cargo handling capacity and meeting the increasing demands of India’s industrial sector. Limestone is a critical raw material for the production of cement and steel, making efficient import logistics essential for these industries.
By expanding its operational capabilities, the port is positioning itself as a key maritime gateway on India’s eastern coast, facilitating smoother trade flows and supporting the country’s growing industrial economy.
A Step Forward in Bulk Cargo Trade
The successful handling of MV VEGA DREAM represents another important step in strengthening Dhamra Port’s presence in India’s bulk cargo trade network. With improved infrastructure, deep-draft berths, and the capacity to handle large vessels, the port is well positioned to offer more efficient logistics solutions to its customers.
As India’s industrial demand continues to grow, developments like this highlight how ports such as Dhamra are playing a vital role in enhancing maritime connectivity, improving supply chain efficiency, and supporting economic growth.
