Delhi CM Rekha Gupta 'slapped' during Jan Sunvai event, BJP condemns incident

A shocking incident unfolded on Wednesday during the weekly Jan Sunvai (public hearing) at Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s residence in Civil Lines, where she was allegedly slapped by a man in his 30s. The episode has raised serious concerns over the safety of political leaders, especially during public interactions.
What Happened at Jan Sunvai?
According to eyewitnesses, the chief minister was listening to citizens’ grievances when the man stepped forward, handed her a piece of paper, and began speaking loudly, using offensive language. Before anyone could react, he allegedly slapped the CM and even pulled her hair. Security personnel immediately overpowered him and handed him over to the Civil Lines Police Station.
Police and Party Reactions
Delhi Police confirmed that one person has been detained in connection with the attack. While the motive is not yet clear, officials said further investigation is underway.
The Delhi BJP unit described the incident as a “mishap” and strongly condemned the assault. BJP Delhi president Virendraa Sachdeva stated, “We strongly condemn the attack on CM Rekha Gupta during the weekly Jan Sunvai. Police inquiry will reveal the details.”
BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor added that the man not only slapped the CM but also pulled her hair, hinting that the attacker might have had “criminal intent and political leanings.”
Eyewitness Account
A woman identified as Anjali, who claimed to be present at the scene, told ANI that the attacker suddenly slapped the CM while speaking to her. “This is wrong. Everyone has the right to Jan Sunvai. If an imposter can slap her, this is a big deal… Police have taken him away,” she said.
Opposition Reaction
The incident has also drawn reactions from the opposition. Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav termed it “very unfortunate” and stressed that such events should be condemned across party lines. He further highlighted concerns over women’s safety, questioning, “If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can a common man or common woman be safe?”
Broader Concerns
The attack has sparked a debate on security lapses at public events and the need for stronger safeguards for leaders while ensuring that citizens continue to have direct access to their representatives through initiatives like Jan Sunvai.
While political leaders from across parties have condemned the assault, many are waiting for the police inquiry to shed light on the attacker’s background and intentions.
