Cochin Shipyard to launch India’s first high-capacity ‘Make in India’ dredger on October 18

In a landmark achievement for India’s maritime and shipbuilding sectors, Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) is set to launch the nation’s first high-capacity ‘Make in India’ dredger on October 18. The state-run shipyard built the advanced dredger for Dredging Corporation of India Ltd (DCI) with technical support from the Netherlands, marking a major step forward in India’s self-reliance and technological prowess in marine engineering.

A milestone for Indian shipbuilding
This launch comes close on the heels of the ₹69,725 crore shipbuilding package approved by the Union Cabinet in September, underscoring the government’s renewed focus on strengthening the domestic shipbuilding ecosystem. The project is a significant leap in India’s capacity to build large and sophisticated marine vessels within its borders, reducing dependency on imports and enhancing industrial capability.

Engineering excellence on display
Launching a ship is a crucial milestone in its construction. It is the first time the vessel touches water, allowing engineers to test its stability, buoyancy, and marine systems. This phase also marks progress in the payment cycle for the shipyard, moving the project into its next phase  outfitting and sea trials. According to officials, the dredger is expected to be delivered to DCI within six months of the launch.

Dutch collaboration, Indian innovation
Built under Dutch technological guidance, the high-capacity dredger combines international expertise with Indian manufacturing strength. It highlights how strategic collaborations can enhance indigenous capabilities while aligning with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ missions.

A boost for India’s maritime future
Once operational, this vessel will play a crucial role in maintaining navigational channels, ports, and harbours, supporting India’s growing trade and maritime infrastructure. For Cochin Shipyard, the project reinforces its reputation as one of the country’s premier shipbuilders and showcases its ability to deliver complex, large-scale vessels for both domestic and global clients.

The October 18 launch is not just an event it’s a symbol of India’s engineering progress, strategic self-reliance, and maritime ambition sailing confidently into the future.
