CMA CGM signs $600m Vietnam box terminal deal

Strengthening Northern Vietnam’s Port Infrastructure

Global shipping giant CMA CGM has taken a major step toward expanding its presence in Asia by signing a landmark $600 million agreement with Saigon Newport Corporation (SNP). The partnership will see the development of a new deepwater terminal in Haiphong, located in northern Vietnam, marking a significant investment in one of Southeast Asia's most strategic trade corridors.

Design, Construction, and Operations Underway

The newly signed deal includes the design, construction, and operation of Lach Huyen terminals 7 and 8, part of the growing Lach Huyen port complex in Haiphong. Once completed, the facility will have a handling capacity of 1.9 million TEU (twenty foot equivalent units) and is projected to be operational by 2028. This move comes as Vietnam continues to experience rapid growth in its industrial and logistics sectors, positioning itself as a central player in Asian supply chains.

Expanding CMA CGM’s Footprint in Vietnam

Currently, CMA CGM operates 29 weekly shipping services through seven Vietnamese ports, underscoring the nation’s increasing importance to global maritime trade. The French shipping group, headquartered in Marseille, already holds joint ownership in the Gemalink terminal at Cai Mep and the Vietnam International Container Terminal (VICT) in Ho Chi Minh City. This new terminal in Haiphong strengthens CMA CGM’s foothold across the entire length of Vietnam’s coastline.

Securing Long Term Capacity in a Growing Market

The new terminal is more than just an infrastructure project    it’s a strategic commitment to long term capacity in a region that has become integral to Asian supply chains. CMA CGM emphasized that the Haiphong development will play a crucial role in handling the surging demand for container traffic driven by Vietnam’s booming manufacturing sector and trade activities.

A Future Oriented Maritime Vision

With this initiative, CMA CGM is not only reinforcing its role in Southeast Asia but also ensuring that it keeps pace with global trade evolution. The Lach Huyen expansion reflects the group’s forward thinking approach to logistics, sustainability, and operational efficiency in high growth markets.
