BJP pays tributes to Sardar Patel, lashes out at Cong over vote politics
Remembering the Iron Man of India
On the death anniversary of India’s first Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Bharatiya Janata Party paid homage to one of the most decisive leaders in Indian history. Telangana State BJP President N Ramchander Rao offered floral tributes by garlanding Patel’s portrait at the party’s state office in Hyderabad. Speaking to the media, Rao described Patel as the true architect of modern India, whose leadership laid the foundation for a united nation.
Role in National Integration
Highlighting Patel’s historic contribution, Rao recalled how Sardar Patel unified more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union after Independence. He particularly emphasized Patel’s decisive role in integrating the Hyderabad State covering present-day Telangana and parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka through Operation Polo. Despite resistance from the Nizam, who sought to merge with Pakistan or declare independence, Patel ensured Hyderabad became an integral part of India. Rao stated that Indians proudly identify as one nation today because of Patel’s firm and visionary leadership.
Criticism of Congress and Constitutional Concerns
Rao strongly criticised the Congress party for what he termed as forgetting Sardar Patel’s legacy while glorifying leaders who weakened constitutional values. He cited the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as a major example of constitutional violation. According to Rao, Congress has historically undermined democratic institutions, including the Election Commission.
Allegations Over Recent Remarks
The BJP leader also condemned recent statements made by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. He alleged that their remarks threatened constitutional bodies and reflected sympathy toward infiltrators. Rao asserted that the Constitution clearly states that only Indian citizens are eligible to be part of the voter list.
Stand on Voter Integrity
Reiterating BJP’s position, Rao stated that the party is committed to ensuring that only genuine Indian citizens are enrolled as voters. He said there is no constitutional provision allowing non-Indians on electoral rolls, and safeguarding voter integrity remains a key priority for the BJP.
Welfare Politics vs Vote Bank Politics
Rao highlighted various welfare schemes introduced under the Modi government, stating that they benefit SCs, STs, BCs, women and minorities alike. He accused the Congress party of indulging in divisive politics based on caste, religion and region, contrasting it with BJP’s focus on inclusive development and constitutional values.
Conclusion
Through the tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the BJP reiterated its commitment to national unity, constitutional integrity and inclusive governance. At the same time, it used the occasion to sharply criticise the Congress party’s political approach, positioning itself as the true inheritor of Patel’s legacy and vision for India.
