AI-Powered Video Insights Are Coming to Google Drive Here’s When You’ll Get Them

Google is redefining the way users interact with video content on Google Drive through the power of artificial intelligence. With the latest expansion of its Gemini AI assistant, users will soon be able to extract valuable insights from videos without watching them from start to finish saving time and enhancing productivity like never before.
Smarter Video Navigation with Gemini
Starting this week, Google is rolling out a major upgrade for Gemini inside Google Drive. Previously limited to analyzing documents and PDFs, Gemini’s capabilities now extend to video files. Users can prompt Gemini to:
Generate AI-powered video summaries
Extract actionable items
Answer specific questions related to the video content
This innovation leverages Google’s auto-generated captions, which are enabled by default for all videos stored in Drive. These captions allow Gemini to interpret audio content and respond accurately, all in English for now. However, it's worth noting that Workspace administrators may have customized caption settings.
Enhanced File Engagement Analytics
Alongside Gemini’s intelligent video analysis, Google is introducing new engagement metrics within the Details panel for each video. This update allows users to see how many times a video has been opened offering a simple but insightful way to measure interest and activity across shared files.
Availability: Who Gets It and When?
The rollout for this new AI-powered feature will be gradual, starting with rapid release domains on May 28, followed by a full rollout beginning June 16. The feature will be accessible to users on the following plans:
Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus
Google Workspace Enterprise Standard and Plus
Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium add-ons
Google One AI Premium
Previous purchasers of Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons
How It Works
To engage with this feature, simply click the “Ask Gemini” star icon while previewing a video in Google Drive. This can be done either via the in-app overlay or through the file viewer in a new browser tab. Gemini then pulls insights using the video’s captions, eliminating the need to manually skim through hours of footage.
A Broader AI Vision
This announcement also follows Google I/O 2024, where Google showcased the integration of Gemini 2.5 Pro AI into Android Studio. This update allows developers to use Gemini for advanced agentic AI tasks, such as tracking user journeys across both real and virtual Android environments signaling a powerful future for AI within Google’s ecosystem.
“Videos contain a wealth of information, however going back to watch them can be time consuming,” Google noted in its Workspace Updates blog. “With this update, users can leverage Gemini to get what they need from their videos much faster.”
With this update, Google takes another confident step toward making AI not just accessible but deeply integrated into everyday workflows. The future of video productivity in Google Drive is smarter, faster, and more intuitive powered by Gemini.
