Adani Group sets October 8 for Navi Mumbai Airport inauguration

The Adani Group has officially announced October 8 as the inauguration date for the highly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), marking a landmark moment in India’s infrastructure journey. The announcement was confirmed by Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, just days after the project secured its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the final regulatory nod before commercial operations can begin.

A Joint Venture of Global Scale

Navi Mumbai International Airport is being developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), a joint venture where the Adani Group holds a commanding 74% stake, while the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) owns the remaining 26%. Envisioned as one of Asia’s largest aviation hubs, the airport has been carefully planned in five phases to meet the growing demand for both passenger and cargo traffic.

Capacity and Expansion Plans

At full capacity, NMI will be able to handle 90 million passengers and 3.2 million tonnes of cargo annually, transforming it into a central hub for global connectivity. The first phase alone is expected to accommodate 20 million passengers each year, significantly easing congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Strategic Location Advantage

Navi Mumbai International Airport’s location underscores its strategic importance. Situated just 14 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), 22 km from Taloja Industrial Area, 32 km from Thane, and 40 km from Bhiwandi, the airport will serve as a vital link between passenger air travel and cargo logistics. Its integration with surrounding industrial and trade hubs will enhance Western India’s role in international trade and commerce.

The airport boasts a 3,700-metre runway capable of accommodating large commercial aircraft, modern passenger terminals, and advanced air traffic control systems. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, India currently has 162 operational airports.
