Hapag-Lloyd Q1 2025 EBITDA reaches €1 billion

Hapag-Lloyd Q1 2025 EBITDA reaches €1 billion

Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world’s leading shipping and logistics companies, has reported a robust performance in the first quarter of 2025. The company’s EBITDA rose by 17 per cent year-over-year (YoY), reaching €1.0 billion ($1.1 billion), while EBIT jumped 24 per cent to €0.47 billion ($0.5 billion). This significant growth demonstrates Hapag-Lloyd’s strong momentum at the start of the year, driven by improved operational performance and rising global demand.

Transport Volume and Freight Rates on the Rise

A key contributor to Hapag-Lloyd’s Q1 success was a 9 per cent increase in transport volume, which climbed to 3.3 million TEUs. In parallel, average freight rates improved, reaching €1,390 per TEU ($1,480). These figures underscore the resilience of global trade and Hapag-Lloyd’s ability to capitalize on market opportunities despite global uncertainties.

Strategic Vision and Market Outlook

Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, commented on the results:
“We got 2025 off to a good start, but the market is currently characterised by many uncertainties. We therefore expect lower results for 2025 as a whole.”

To address these uncertainties and continue building a sustainable and competitive edge, Hapag-Lloyd is staying committed to its long-term Strategy 2030. The strategy includes expanding its Hanseatic Global Terminals, boosting fleet efficiency, decarbonising operations, tightening cost control, and accelerating digital transformation.

Full-Year Forecast and Strategic Moves

Despite the strong Q1 performance, Hapag-Lloyd has taken a cautious approach to its full-year guidance. For FY2025, the company expects a Group EBITDA of €2.4 – 3.9 billion ($2.5 – 4.0 billion) and EBIT in the range of €0.0 – 1.5 billion ($0.0 – 1.5 billion). These forecasts reflect the company’s prudent assessment of potential market volatility in the months ahead.

Expansion in the Asia-Pacific Region

In March 2025, Hapag-Lloyd marked a key regional milestone as International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI)’s flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) welcomed the company’s inaugural China-Philippines Feeder (CPF) service. This move signals Hapag-Lloyd’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its network across Asia and enhance service offerings for regional customers.
