WhatsApp rolls out ‘Strict Account Settings’ for stronger protection with one tap
New Delhi:
WhatsApp has rolled out a new security feature aimed at protecting users from advanced cyber threats. The feature, called Strict Account Settings, allows users to activate multiple high-level security protections with a single tap. With this move, WhatsApp joins other major technology companies in offering enhanced account safety for users facing elevated digital risks.
The new feature is designed to simplify access to advanced security controls that were previously available individually. By bundling them into one setting, WhatsApp makes it easier for users to strengthen their account protection without navigating multiple options.
Who is the feature designed for
According to WhatsApp, Strict Account Settings are primarily intended for users who may be at risk of rare and highly sophisticated cyberattacks. This includes journalists, activists, researchers, and public-facing individuals who could be targets of surveillance or hacking attempts. While the feature is available to all users, it is particularly useful for those with higher security needs.
What Strict Account Settings do
Once enabled, Strict Account Settings automatically activate several protective measures. These include blocking media files and attachments from unknown senders, disabling link previews that display thumbnails when URLs are shared, and silencing calls from unknown contacts. WhatsApp stated that these elements have been identified as potential entry points for advanced surveillance and cyberattacks.
By limiting how unknown users can interact with an account, the feature reduces exposure to malicious links, spyware, and unwanted intrusion attempts.
One-tap activation for existing security controls
Although these security tools already exist on WhatsApp, users previously had to enable them individually. Strict Account Settings bring all these protections together, allowing them to be activated instantly with a single tap. This approach prioritises ease of use while maintaining strong security standards.
How to enable Strict Account Settings on WhatsApp
Users can enable the feature by going to Settings > Privacy > Advanced within the WhatsApp app. If the option is not visible, users should update the app to the latest version. In some cases, the feature may not appear immediately, as WhatsApp is rolling it out gradually and expects it to be available to all users in the coming weeks.
Similar security features from Apple and Google
WhatsApp’s move follows similar initiatives by other major tech companies. In 2022, Apple introduced Lockdown Mode, an optional feature designed for users facing extreme digital threats. Lockdown Mode restricts message attachments, disables link previews, and limits FaceTime calls and certain web activities.
Last year, Alphabet rolled out Advanced Protection Mode on Android devices. This feature prioritises security over convenience by restricting app downloads from outside the Google Play Store and limiting potentially risky system functions.
