V.O. Chidambaranar Port registers over 1 million tonne cargo growth in FY26
Introduction
V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port), Tuticorin, has continued its upward growth trajectory in FY26 by recording a cargo handling increase of over one million metric tonnes compared to the previous financial year. This steady rise reflects the port’s operational efficiency, strong infrastructure base, and growing role in India’s maritime trade ecosystem.
Cargo Performance in FY26
As of 27 December 2025, VOC Port handled 31.42 million tonnes of cargo, up from 30.39 million tonnes during the same period in FY 2024–25. This translates into a year-on-year growth of 3.39 per cent, marking a significant milestone for the port. The growth has been driven by consistent performance across multiple cargo segments, showcasing the port’s balanced and resilient operations.
Strategic Importance for South India
VOC Port serves as a vital maritime gateway for South India, facilitating trade for industries across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states. Its strategic location, combined with efficient cargo handling systems and improving multimodal connectivity, enables smooth movement of both bulk and break-bulk cargo. The port’s role is especially critical for regional industrial clusters that rely on timely and cost-effective logistics support.
Operational Efficiency and Infrastructure Utilisation
According to port officials, the cargo growth is a result of continuous operational improvements and optimal utilisation of existing infrastructure. Enhanced planning, streamlined processes, and better coordination with trade stakeholders have helped improve turnaround times and overall productivity. These measures have strengthened confidence among exporters, importers, and logistics service providers using the port.
Future Outlook and Growth Potential
With ongoing capacity enhancement initiatives and a strong focus on ease of doing business, VOC Port is well positioned to further expand its contribution to regional and national maritime trade. As India continues to strengthen its port-led development strategy, V.O. Chidambaranar Port is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting trade growth, industrial development, and economic progress in the years ahead.
