Varanasi DC directs officials to expedite works of multi-modal terminal, freight village projects

In a major push to accelerate infrastructure development in the region, Division Commissioner S Rajalingam has issued strict directives to ensure the timely completion of two transformative projects – the Multi-Modal Terminal and the Freight Village – in Varanasi. His visit on Monday marked a critical review of progress and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to turning Varanasi into a key logistics hub in eastern India.

Inspections and Guidelines for Progress

During his inspection, Commissioner Rajalingam laid out specific guidelines for the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and reviewed various vessels anchored at the terminal, including MV Bengal Ganga, SL Jahnavi, the Hydrogen-powered H-2 boat, and the municipal corporation boat. These vessels symbolize Varanasi’s growing role in inland waterway connectivity under the National Waterway-1 (NW-1) scheme.

100-Acre MMLP Development in Focus

A major highlight of the visit was the assessment of land acquired on the Varanasi-Chandauli border, where the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) is developing a state-of-the-art  cover 100 acres. The commissioner examined the progress and requested detailed updates from the officials regarding current developments.

Integrated Transport Connectivity

Officials briefed the commissioner on the comprehensive connectivity plan, which includes a 5.1 km railway line from Jeevanathpur Junction to the freight village. This connection will link the village to the New Delhi–Howrah rail freight corridor, creating a seamless freight route from Northeast India to South India. Additionally, the project site is strategically located just 650 meters from NH-7 and NH-2, ensuring easy road access.

The freight village will also be connected to the Ralhupur Multi-Modal Terminal, further strengthening cargo movement through the National Waterway-1 to Haldia. This integrated network of road, rail, and water transport is expected to drastically reduce logistics costs and enhance trade efficiency.

Economic and Employment Opportunities

Once completed, these projects will not only streamline freight movement but also attract substantial investments and generate employment in the region. The development of these logistics infrastructures positions Varanasi as a key node in India’s multimodal transport ecosystem.

Administrative Directives and Welfare Focus

Before visiting the site, the commissioner also reviewed ongoing development initiatives in Chandauli district. He emphasized the importance of resolving old revenue disputes swiftly and urged the administration to remain vigilant amid the ongoing heatwave, ensuring necessary precautions are in place. Commissioner Rajalingam underlined the importance of teamwork and dedication, reminding officials that delivering quality services to the public must remain their top priority.

The inspection was attended by IWAI’s Varanasi in-charge RP Pandey and several other officials, signaling the collaborative effort behind these landmark projects.
