'Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh': Suryakumar Yadav clearly saw Mohsin Naqvi leave with Asia Cup after India remained defiant

The 2025 Asia Cup final between India and Pakistan turned out to be one of the most dramatic cricketing spectacles of the year not just on the field, but also off it. While India clinched the coveted title with a thrilling five-wicket victory in Dubai, what followed during the post-match presentation left fans in disbelief.
India’s narrow win in a tense final
The India vs Pakistan rivalry lived up to its billing once again. Both teams had equal chances to lift the trophy, but Rinku Singh’s composed boundary under pressure sealed India’s win. Much like the previous encounters between the two sides in the tournament, the final was not without controversy.
Presentation ceremony chaos
After the game, the stage was set for celebrations, but the trophy presentation spiraled into confusion. Reports suggested that Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni would hand over the trophy to India. However, events unfolded differently. Once Pakistan’s players collected their medals and Salman Agha received the runners-up cheque, commentator Simon Doull stunned everyone by announcing that India would not be taking the trophy.
In a surprising turn, Asia Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi who is also Pakistan’s interior minister and the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman reportedly left the venue with the Asia Cup trophy. This triggered loud boos from the crowd and widespread debate among fans and experts.
Suryakumar Yadav’s clarification
Speaking to The Indian Express, India’s stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav shed light on the theatrics. He made it clear that the Indian team did not delay the ceremony.
“We didn’t close the door and sit inside the dressing room. We didn’t make anyone wait for the presentation ceremony. Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh (They ran away with the trophy). That’s what I saw. I don’t know, some people were making a video of us, but we were standing. We didn’t go inside,” Suryakumar said.
He also dismissed speculation about any political instructions behind India’s actions.
“First of all, let me make it clear, no one from the Government or the BCCI told us anything throughout the tournament that if someone gives a trophy, we won’t take it. We took that decision on our own on the ground. They (ACC officials) were standing there on the stage and we were standing below. I saw them talking on stage and I don’t know the details of their chat. Some in the crowd started booing. And then we saw someone who was their representative taking the trophy and running away,” he explained.
BCCI’s stance
Adding to the controversy, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the Indian cricket board will be filing an official complaint against Naqvi’s actions. With both boards now caught in the storm, the incident threatens to become yet another flashpoint in India-Pakistan cricket relations.
What lies ahead?
The Asia Cup final may have ended with India’s name etched in the record books, but the trophy saga has overshadowed the on-field brilliance. Fans are now left wondering whether the silverware will return to its rightful winners or if the controversy will drag on. One thing, however, is certain the phrase “Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh” will be remembered long after the dust settles.
