Tech projects introduced to increase Indian marine industry’s production and efficiency

India’s maritime sector is experiencing a transformative wave with the introduction of multiple high-impact technology projects aimed at enhancing productivity, streamlining operations, and embracing sustainability. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), these digital advancements are poised to redefine the efficiency standards across the Indian marine industry.
Major Launches by MoPSW
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently launched a series of tech-driven initiatives that mark a significant shift toward digital transformation in maritime logistics. Among the most impactful are the SAGAR SETU platform and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). This MoU is focused on the development and establishment of a Digital Centre of Excellence (DCoE) a hub for cutting-edge innovation, training, and sustainable infrastructure enhancement.
SAGAR SETU: The Game-Changer for Maritime Logistics
As part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, SAGAR SETU is designed to streamline and digitalize the EXIM (export-import) ecosystem. This robust platform integrates over 80 ports and 40 major stakeholders, enabling a paperless and faster documentation process for vessels and cargo. By reducing processing times and consolidating service providers, SAGAR SETU enhances transparency and significantly boosts operational efficiency in port logistics.
DRISHTI Framework for Performance Monitoring
Another significant launch is the DRISHTI framework Data-driven Decision Support-Review-Institutional Information-System for-Hastening and-Tracking-Implementation. Built on four strategic pillars: KPI Monitoring, Achievements Tracking, Organisational Monitoring, and Functional Cell Oversight, DRISHTI is tailored to fast-track the goals outlined in Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. The initiative reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance model of “Reform, Perform, Transform, Inform,” ensuring a holistic approach to performance and accountability across the sector.
Towards a Digitally Empowered Marine Future
The synergy of these initiatives promises a strong foundation for sustainable growth in India’s marine industry. With improved coordination, real-time monitoring, and integrated platforms, India is moving closer to becoming a global maritime hub. These steps not only address the current bottlenecks in port and cargo operations but also future-proof the industry for emerging global trade dynamics.
