Shubman Gill discharged from hospital, but uncertainty looms over his participation in Guwahati Test vs South Africa
India captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from the Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital in Kolkata after suffering a neck injury during the opening Test against South Africa. The 25-year-old incurred the injury on Day 2 at the Eden Gardens, an unfortunate moment that now casts uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming Guwahati Test starting November 22.
Gill walked in to bat just over an hour into the second morning after nightwatchman Washington Sundar fell to spinner Shimon Harmer. However, on only the third delivery he faced, Gill slog-swept Harmer for a boundary and immediately appeared in severe discomfort. He was seen clutching the back of his neck as the Indian physio rushed out to attend to him. Moments later, he retired hurt due to intense neck spasm and did not return to the crease for the remainder of the match.
The BCCI later confirmed that Gill was taken to the hospital for detailed examination after stumps on Day 2. His absence proved costly for India, who were bowled out for just 93 runs in their fourth-innings chase of 124, handing South Africa a 30-run win and a 1-0 lead in the series.
Following the defeat, CAB president Sourav Ganguly visited Gill at the hospital on Sunday, checking on the skipper’s recovery. According to a PTI report, the team management is yet to make a final decision on whether Gill will be fit to play the second Test. The squad is scheduled to travel to Guwahati on Tuesday, but Gill’s availability will depend on his medical assessment over the next couple of days.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir also provided an update, stating that Gill is still under evaluation. “He’s still being assessed. The physio will take a call today,” Gambhir said in the post-match press conference.
If Gill is ruled out of the crucial Guwahati Test, the management is likely to bring in Devdutt Padikkal as a replacement option in the playing XI. With India trailing the two-match series, the decision on Gill’s fitness becomes even more critical as the team looks to level the contest.
