PM Modi to inaugurate various development projects in Tamil Nadu

In a major push to infrastructure growth and regional connectivity in southern India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate a series of significant development projects during his visit to Tamil Nadu on 26th–27th July 2025. The initiatives, spanning ports, airports, and highways, align with the Central Government’s larger vision of clean energy, efficient logistics, and modern public infrastructure.

Port Infrastructure Gets a Major Boost

One of the highlights of the visit will be the inauguration of the North Cargo Berth–III at V.O. Chidambaranar Port, a major step toward enhancing port logistics. Developed at a cost of around Rs 285 crore, the berth boasts a cargo handling capacity of 6.96 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA). This addition is expected to significantly ease the growing demand for dry bulk cargo in the region and improve the overall efficiency of cargo movement, marking a pivotal advancement in port-led industrial development in Tamil Nadu.

World-Class Terminal at Tuticorin Airport

Further strengthening the region’s connectivity, PM Modi will inaugurate the New Terminal Building at Tuticorin Airport, constructed at an investment of around Rs 450 crore. Spread over 17,340 square meters, the terminal is designed to handle 1,350 passengers during peak hours and 20 lakh passengers annually, with provisions to expand capacity to 1,800 peak hour passengers and 25 lakh annually in the future.

This state-of-the-art facility emphasizes sustainability, featuring 100% LED lighting, energy-efficient electrical and mechanical systems, and treated water reuse through an on-site Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). Built with a vision to attain a GRIHA-4 sustainability rating, the terminal is poised to stimulate tourism, trade, and investment in southern Tamil Nadu. PM Modi will also undertake a walkthrough of the new facility during his visit.

Strategic Highway Projects to Boost Regional Mobility

Adding further momentum to infrastructure development, the Prime Minister will unveil two important highway projects that will improve transportation and reduce travel time for millions.

  1. 4-laning of the 50 km Sethiyathope–Cholapuram stretch on NH-36, developed under the Vikravandi–Thanjavur corridor at an estimated cost of over Rs 2,350 crore. This project includes:

    • Three bypasses

    • A 1-km four-lane bridge over the Kollidam River

    • Four major bridges

    • Seven flyovers

    • Multiple underpasses

  2. These upgrades are expected to reduce travel time by 45 minutes, enhance safety, and improve connectivity to the cultural and agricultural hubs in the Delta region.

  3. 6-laning of the 5.16 km NH-138 Tuticorin Port Road, developed at Rs 200 crore, will feature bridges and underpasses that streamline cargo movement to and from the port. This project will:

    • Ease logistics

    • Cut transportation costs

    • Support port-led economic growth around the V.O. Chidambaranar Port.

A Holistic Vision for Growth

Together, these projects reflect a comprehensive approach to infrastructure development, merging economic growth with environmental responsibility. By enhancing multi-modal logistics, air connectivity, and surface transport, these initiatives will play a key role in unlocking the development potential of southern Tamil Nadu.

As India moves towards becoming a global logistics hub, the initiatives being launched by PM Modi in Tamil Nadu serve as a shining example of the transformational infrastructure agenda in action.
