PM Modi, German Chancellor Merz inaugurate International Kite Festival 2026 in Ahmedabad

The vibrant skies of Ahmedabad came alive as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Kite Festival 2026 on Monday, January 12, at the iconic Sabarmati Riverfront. The event witnessed the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as the chief guest, marking a moment of cultural diplomacy and global celebration. The two leaders formally launched the festival by flying kites, symbolising friendship, harmony, and shared traditions.

Grand Welcome with Music, Dance, and Cultural Performances

Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz were accorded a grand welcome with traditional music and vibrant dance performances. The cultural showcase highlighted India’s rich artistic diversity, featuring Gujarati folk dance Beda Raas along with classical forms such as Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, and the traditional sport-art form Mallakhamb. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, members of the State Cabinet, MLAs, municipal office-bearers, and senior State government officials were also present at the ceremony.

Celebrating Ahmedabad’s Architectural and Cultural Heritage

As part of the inauguration, the dignitaries visited an exhibit showcasing the architectural heritage of Ahmedabad’s historic pols and havelis. A specially designed heritage walkway featured a kite museum and a photo wall depicting the city’s cultural evolution. The leaders were briefed on kites from different Indian states, crafted using diverse materials and techniques, and also observed live kite-making demonstrations by skilled artisans.

A Festival Rooted in Uttarayan Traditions

Held annually ahead of Uttarayan, also known as Makar Sankranti, the International Kite Festival draws inspiration from Gujarat’s age-old kite-flying traditions. Celebrated on January 14 this year, Uttarayan marks the sun’s northward journey and the transition towards summer. The festival is being organised by Gujarat Tourism and continues to be a major cultural attraction for visitors from across the globe.

Musical Harmony Across Cultures

One of the highlights of the inauguration was a musical ensemble performed by 108 artists from Gujarat and Rajasthan. The orchestra featured instruments such as sitar, sarangi, violin, mandolin, harmonium, flute, dholak, tabla, and mridang. The performance included patriotic and devotional compositions like Vande Mataram and Vaishnav Jan, along with selected German musical pieces, reflecting cross-cultural harmony.

Global Participation Lights Up Ahmedabad’s Skies

This year’s festival has drawn massive international participation, with 135 kite flyers from 50 countries taking part. Additionally, 65 kite flyers from 13 Indian states and 871 participants from 16 districts of Gujarat are showcasing their skills. Countries represented include Germany, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Spain, Italy, Canada, and many more, making the festival a truly global event.

Upcoming Evening Events and Attractions

On January 13 at 7 p.m., visitors can look forward to a grand symphony performance by 108 artists, followed by a cultural programme. Popular folk singer Kinjal Dave will perform live, and illuminated kites are set to light up the night sky, offering a breathtaking visual experience.

Showcasing Gujarati Cuisine and Handicrafts

To give visitors a taste of Gujarat’s rich culinary and craft traditions, the festival venue hosts 25 handicraft stalls and 15 food stalls. These stalls offer traditional Gujarati delicacies and locally made handicraft products, adding to the festive atmosphere along the Sabarmati Riverfront.

The International Kite Festival 2026 once again positions Ahmedabad as a global cultural destination, blending tradition, art, music, and international friendship under one colourful sky.
