PM Modi begins media address; Opposition to bring up Delhi AQI, SIR

The much-anticipated Winter Session of Parliament 2025 officially begins today, December 1, setting the stage for an intense political showdown in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. With the session scheduled to run until December 19 across 15 sittings, the government and opposition are preparing for a packed legislative calendar filled with major discussions, critical bills, and sharp political exchanges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed media representatives at 10 am from Hans Dwar in Parliament House, calling for constructive debate and urging all parties to maintain decorum and avoid unnecessary drama. His remarks come at a time when the Opposition has already signalled its intention to corner the Centre on several key issues.

Opposition Prepared to Challenge Government on Multiple Fronts

In the run-up to the session, opposition MPs have made clear their plan to raise a series of concerns, chief among them the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, currently underway in 12 states. They argue that the process lacks transparency and may affect the fairness of upcoming elections. On Sunday, opposition leaders demanded a full debate on the SIR, warning that the functioning of both Houses could be disrupted if their request is ignored.

In addition to electoral roll concerns, the Opposition plans to highlight issues such as:

  • Equality and income disparities

  • Red Fort blast investigation updates

  • Increasing air pollution in Delhi

  • Foreign policy decisions and their national impact

With such a diverse list of topics, the session is expected to witness intense deliberations and pointed questioning from the Opposition benches.

Government’s Focus: Legislative Productivity and Economic Reforms

Ahead of the session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced the schedule and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a productive House. An all-party meeting was convened to discuss the agenda, where the Centre emphasised the importance of cooperation to ensure the smooth passage of several key bills.

One of the most significant legislative items on the table is the Atomic Energy Bill 2025, which seeks to open the nuclear power-generation sector to private investment a potentially groundbreaking reform aimed at accelerating India’s clean energy transition. The government is also expected to introduce and debate a range of economic and financial bills critical to the country’s long-term growth strategy.

Session Outlook: High Stakes, Heavy Agenda

With only 15 sittings available, the Winter Session 2025 is set to be short but heavily loaded. The combination of politically charged issues and impactful economic legislation ensures that every day of the session will be closely watched.

As Parliament reconvenes, all eyes are on how both Houses balance debate with productivity and whether PM Modi’s call for “no drama” translates into a smoother legislative process or becomes another flashpoint of contention.

The coming weeks will determine not just the trajectory of key national policies but also the political narrative as India moves closer to major electoral milestones.
