PM Modi arrives in Japan on two-day visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday (August 29, 2025) for a two-day official visit aimed at deepening bilateral relations and advancing strategic cooperation between India and Japan.
Strengthening Civilisational and Cultural Bonds
Before his departure, PM Modi highlighted the cultural and historical ties shared between India and Japan, calling the visit an important opportunity to reinforce these civilisational bonds. “My visit to Japan will be an opportunity to strengthen civilisational bonds and cultural ties between the two countries,” he said in his statement.
Summit Talks with Japanese Prime Minister
During his stay in Japan from August 29 to 30, PM Modi is scheduled to hold wide-ranging summit talks with his Japanese counterpart, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions will cover various aspects of the India-Japan partnership, including economic, technological, and security cooperation.
Focus on Strategic and Economic Partnership
Underscoring the importance of the visit, PM Modi said, “We would focus on shaping the next phase in our Special Strategic and Global Partnership, which has made steady and significant progress over the past 11 years.” He further added, “We would endeavour to give new wings to our collaboration, expand scope and ambition of our economic and investment ties, and advance cooperation in new and emerging technologies, including AI and semiconductors.”
From Tokyo to Tianjin: A Packed Diplomatic Tour
Following his engagements in Japan, PM Modi will head to Tianjin, China, on August 31 for a two-day visit to attend the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. There, he will participate in discussions with global leaders to strengthen regional cooperation.
Advancing Peace and Development
Expressing optimism about his back-to-back diplomatic visits, PM Modi stated, “I am confident that my visits to Japan and China would further our national interests and priorities, and contribute to building fruitful cooperation in advancing regional and global peace, security, and sustainable development.”
