PM Modi ahead of G20 Summit in South Africa: 'Will present India's perspective in line with our vision'

The G20 Summit 2025 marks an important moment in global diplomacy as it is being held in Africa for the first time. Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed from New Delhi on Friday for a three-day visit to Johannesburg, South Africa, where he will represent India and present what he described as “India’s perspective in line with our vision”. His visit highlights India’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with global partners and deepening engagement with the African continent, especially after India hosted the historic G20 Summit in 2023 when the African Union became a permanent member of the group.

G20 Summit in Africa: A Special Global Gathering
PM Modi emphasised that the Summit holds special significance since it is being hosted on African soil for the very first time. He noted that South Africa’s Presidency has adopted the theme “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability”, a continuation of the outcomes of the New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro Summits. According to the Prime Minister, the G20 will offer a vital platform to discuss pressing global issues and future development pathways.

India’s Vision at the G20
In his departure statement, PM Modi reiterated India’s core philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning the world is one family. He stated that he will present India’s approach aligned with the idea of One Earth, One Family, One Future. His participation will reflect India’s position on inclusive growth, global cooperation and sustainable development. PM Modi also mentioned that various world leaders will attend the Summit and that the discussions will cover a wide range of geopolitical and economic issues.

Key Agendas at the 2025 G20 Summit
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that PM Modi will speak in all three key sessions of the Summit. The first session, titled “Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth Leaving No One Behind”, will focus on global economic stability, trade, development financing and the rising burden of international debt. The second session, “A Resilient World – the G20’s Contribution”, will cover disaster risk reduction, climate change, just energy transitions and food systems. The final session, “A Fair and Just Future for All”, will highlight issues such as critical minerals, decent work opportunities and the role of artificial intelligence in shaping the future.

Participation in the IBSA Summit and Bilateral Meetings
During his stay in Johannesburg, PM Modi will also participate in the sixth IBSA Summit, which brings together India, Brazil and South Africa to strengthen trilateral cooperation. In addition, he is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with global leaders on the sidelines of the event. These engagements are aimed at reinforcing India’s partnerships and exploring new areas of collaboration.

Interaction With the Indian Diaspora
PM Modi expressed enthusiasm about meeting the Indian community in South Africa, one of the largest Indian-origin populations outside India. He emphasised that India deeply values its cultural and economic ties with the Indian diaspora, which plays a significant role in strengthening people-to-people bonds.

G20 Members and Global Representation
The G20 represents 85 percent of global GDP, 75 percent of international trade and nearly two-thirds of the world’s population. Its members include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkiye, the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union and the African Union.

A Crucial Moment for Global Cooperation
With the world facing interconnected challenges, from economic inequalities to climate change and technological disruptions, the 2025 G20 Summit serves as a crucial forum for collaborative solutions. PM Modi’s participation reflects India’s proactive role in shaping global conversations and advocating for inclusive and sustainable approaches.

As the Summit unfolds in Johannesburg, all eyes are on how world leaders will navigate complex global issues and how India’s vision of collective progress will contribute to the discussions.
