NTC logistics triumphs over monsoon and mountain challenges in 142T ODC move

A feat of engineering precision and operational mastery
NTC Logistics has once again proven its unrivalled capability in handling over-dimensional cargo (ODC), successfully transporting a 142-tonne unit from Ambikanagar, Karnataka, to Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Covering over 850 km, the journey tested every aspect of engineering precision, operational planning, and sheer determination.
Early trials: Monsoon strikes and narrow mountain passes
The cargo measuring 7.6 m in length, 3.5 m in width, and 4.7 m in height faced its biggest challenge within the first 110 km. Shortly after loading, the West Coast monsoon unleashed heavy rains, forcing the convoy to halt at a critical section. Here, road shoulders had to be extended using 500 sandbags before movement could resume. With the full support of the client, NTC’s technical team deployed three pullers to tackle treacherous hairpin bends across the first five kilometres, overcoming this initial barrier.
Navigating heritage obstacles
Tree trimming operations ensured further progress, but at the 40 km mark, a deteriorating British-era stone arch bridge presented a new threat. Already weakened by years of use, the heavy rains had worsened its condition. An alternate RCC bridge nearby remained incomplete without approach roads, adding to the complexity.
Innovation under pressure
For 15 days, the team explored all possible detours without success. Refusing to be defeated, NTC sourced MS steel plates from Gujarat, mobilised a fourth puller from Chennai, and, in cooperation with the State Highways department, built an access road. This decisive action allowed the convoy to cross safely a turning point in the mission.
The final stretch
Five days later, the cargo arrived in Sriperumbudur without incident. The success underscored NTC’s core philosophy of “Safety First” and its unwavering commitment to the “3Ms” Men, Machine, and Material.
Commitment beyond cargo
“Every ODC movement is a test of endurance, planning, and skill,” said an NTC spokesperson. “But safety is always our top priority. Our teams carry not just the cargo, but the responsibility of ensuring operational excellence at every step.”
From torrential rains to engineering roadblocks, this achievement is yet another landmark in NTC Logistics’ mission to navigate the impossible and redefine ODC excellence in India.
