MSC begins cargo recovery from sunken ship off Indian Coast

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has initiated efforts to track and recover containers that washed ashore after its vessel, MSC Elsa 3, sank off the coast of Kochi, India, on May 25.
This incident has posed a significant challenge due to the large number of containers displaced into the sea and subsequently drifting toward the shore. In response, MSC is actively working in close coordination with local authorities to manage the situation and ensure the safety and security of the affected cargo.
To support the recovery operations, MSC has deployed staff on the ground tasked with locating and safeguarding the beached containers. The company is also collaborating with authorities and specialized salvage firms to effectively coordinate the salvage efforts. These combined actions aim to minimize environmental impact and secure the valuable cargo.
Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard has taken proactive measures by deploying three vessels to monitor the affected area for any potential oil spills. To contain possible leakage, dispersants are being applied in the region. Additionally, an aircraft has been dispatched for aerial surveillance and assessment to keep a close watch on the situation from above.
Sarbananda Sonowal, India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, shared updates on the incident via social media, highlighting the government's commitment to addressing the situation promptly and efficiently.
This ongoing joint effort between MSC, local authorities, and maritime agencies underscores the importance of swift action in maritime emergencies to protect coastal environments and maintain shipping safety.
