Methanol Institute welcomes DPA as its new member

Deendayal Port Authority Joins Methanol Institute to Advance Green Maritime Fuel Initiatives

On April 8, 2025, the Methanol Institute (MI) announced the induction of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), located in Kandla, India, as its newest member. This collaboration underscores DPA's commitment to sustainable maritime practices and the promotion of methanol as a viable alternative fuel.

Greg Dolan, CEO of the Methanol Institute, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We are delighted to welcome Deendayal Port Authority to the Methanol Institute. DPA can help play a critical role in accelerating the transition to low-carbon fuels."

DPA has been proactive in its sustainability efforts, including the introduction of energy-efficient cargo handling technologies, the establishment of a 1MW green hydrogen demonstration plant, and the deployment of battery, fuel cell, and hybrid-powered tugboats. Additionally, the port has issued standard operating procedures (SOPs) for methanol bunkering and is collaborating with DNV on a gap analysis study to further its green fuel initiatives.

Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of DPA, highlighted the strategic importance of this membership: "As India, under the visionary leadership of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, aligns its maritime decarbonization strategies with the IMO's Net-Zero goal by 2050, Deendayal Port (erstwhile Kandla Port) increases its focus on participating in Green Shipping Corridors as a supplier of cleaner and greener alternative fuels to vessels."

The Methanol Institute, serving as the global trade association for the methanol industry, represents leading methanol producers, distributors, and technology companies. With offices in Singapore, Washington D.C., Brussels, Beijing, and Delhi, MI plays a pivotal role in promoting methanol as a key chemical building block and alternative fuel for transportation and power generation.

DPA's membership in MI is expected to foster knowledge exchange, support the development of policies and best practices, and facilitate the transition to sustainable shipping, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the maritime sector.
