Konkan railway flags off first container rake of MRPL Polypropylene from Thokur
Introduction
Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) has achieved a significant milestone in freight transportation by flagging off its first-ever container rake carrying polypropylene from Thokur station in Mangaluru taluk. This development marks a new chapter for containerised cargo movement along the Konkan corridor and strengthens the region’s logistics capabilities.
A milestone for MRPL freight movement
The flagged-off consignment belongs to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL). As per official information, MRPL is expected to offer around two container rakes per month for transportation to the Morbi region of Rajasthan. This regular movement is set to create a stable and reliable freight flow on the Konkan Railway network.
Role of Central Warehousing Corporation
The entire traffic will be handled by the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) using its own container rakes. To enable this operation, CWC and MRPL have entered into a formal agreement that operationalises the containerised transportation of polypropylene, ensuring efficiency, safety, and consistency in cargo handling.
Upgraded logistics infrastructure at Thokur
To support containerised and other freight traffic, KRCL, in collaboration with CWC, has developed modern logistics infrastructure at Thokur railway station. The facilities include a paved wharf with approach roads, covered warehouses, open stack yards, and other advanced freight-handling amenities. With these upgrades, Thokur is now positioned as a fully equipped logistics terminal on the Konkan Railway route.
Boost for regional trade and future opportunities
KRCL has stated that the commencement of this container traffic is expected to encourage other customers to utilise the enhanced facilities at Thokur for storage and transportation of goods. This initiative not only strengthens the Konkan corridor’s freight ecosystem but also opens new opportunities for industries in and around the region to adopt rail-based, containerised logistics solutions.
Conclusion
The flagging off of the first MRPL polypropylene container rake from Thokur reflects KRCL’s strategic focus on expanding freight operations and developing modern logistics hubs. With strong collaboration between KRCL, MRPL, and CWC, Thokur is set to emerge as a key node for efficient and sustainable cargo movement on India’s west coast railway network.
