KAU to Allot Five Acres for Vizhinjam-Linked Logistics Hub

Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) is set to play a pivotal role in bolstering the maritime infrastructure of Kerala with its latest initiative. The university is preparing to hand over five acres of land from its Coconut Research Station (CRS) in Balaramapuram to Kerala State Industrial Enterprises (KSIE) for the development of a major logistics hub aimed at supporting Vizhinjam Port. This move reflects the state government’s focus on strengthening the emerging maritime ecosystem in the region.

According to a recent communication from the agriculture (farms) department dated November 6, the government has forwarded the detailed project proposal to the KAU registrar for review. The proposal, drafted for the 2025–26 period, emphasizes the creation of extensive logistics infrastructure on the CRS land and the enhancement of maritime services connected to Vizhinjam Port. KAU has been asked to submit its remarks on the project to facilitate further proceedings.

The land earmarked for the hub, located at Kattachalkuzhi along the Balaramapuram–Vizhinjam Road, is strategically positioned just 5.4 km from the port gate. This proximity provides direct access for 40-foot container trucks, making it an ideal location for handling heavy freight.

The proposed hub, as assessed by TOI, is expected to feature over 50,000 sq ft of multi-user warehousing space, a Container Freight Station (CFS), consolidation and deconsolidation zones, value-added service units, administrative offices, internal road networks, and specialised storage facilities, including potential cold-storage units. The comprehensive infrastructure plan aims to streamline cargo movement, enhance operational efficiency, and support the growing maritime trade activities around Vizhinjam.

Earlier this year, KSIE had requested 15 acres from KAU for the project. University officials have indicated that once the formal notification is issued, revenue proceedings to transfer the land will commence. Once completed, this logistics facility will become the first CFS in the district, marking a significant milestone in Vizhinjam’s expanding logistics and maritime services landscape.

This initiative not only strengthens the strategic significance of Vizhinjam Port but also underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing trade infrastructure and providing robust support to the maritime sector.
