Kandla to host 300 KTPA green ammonia plant under L&T–ITOCHU partnership

A major step towards cleaner maritime fuels
Kandla, Gujarat, is set to become home to a state-of-the-art 300 kilotons per annum (KTPA) green ammonia plant, following a Joint Development Agreement between L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation. Secured by L&T in 2024, the facility will focus on producing green ammonia primarily for export, marking a key milestone in India’s transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

Supporting global maritime decarbonization
Under the agreement, ITOCHU will offtake the green ammonia for bunkering operations in Singapore, enabling the maritime sector to shift from traditional fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives. This aligns with growing global efforts to decarbonize shipping and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across international trade routes.

Aligned with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission
The project supports the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. By leveraging its expertise in manufacturing, engineering, procurement, and construction, L&T aims to play a leading role in the green energy value chain, both domestically and internationally.

A part of L&T’s broader green energy strategy
Industry experts highlight that the Kandla plant is just one piece of L&T’s larger investment roadmap, which includes plans to invest up to ₹48,000 crore in multiple green ammonia facilities. The company aims to scale production to 1.8 million tonnes per annum, targeting exports to Southeast Asia and Europe.

Strengthening India’s position in the global green fuel market
The collaboration combines L&T’s world-class infrastructure capabilities with ITOCHU’s expansive global trade network, enhancing India’s competitiveness in the fast-growing green fuel market. Once operational, the Kandla facility will not only contribute to cleaner maritime fuels but also position India as a key exporter of green ammonia to global markets.
