Kandla Port launches demolition drive against illegal settlements in Gujarat
Introduction
In a significant move to protect port land and enhance operational safety, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has launched a major demolition drive against illegal settlements in Kandla, Gujarat. The operation marks another decisive step toward recovering encroached port land and ensuring smooth functioning of port activities.
Clearing 62 Acres of Encroached Land
According to the DPA, the latest demolition drive was conducted on Monday, targeting illegal settlements spread across 62 acres near Liquid Jetty 7. Officials confirmed that over 500 shanties and hutments were removed during the early-morning operation that began at 6:30 am.
Prior Warnings and Formal Notices
The DPA highlighted that the residents of the illegal settlements had been cautioned multiple times about the impending action. The final set of formal notices was issued on November 25, giving the occupants clear advance warning. Despite repeated alerts, the encroachments continued, leaving the port authority with no option but to carry out the scheduled demolition.
Ensuring Safety and Port Efficiency
A spokesperson for the DPA stated that clearing encroachments near critical operational zones, such as Liquid Jetty 7, is essential for maintaining port safety standards. Illegal structures often interfere with cargo movement, emergency access, and planned infrastructure development making such drives crucial for long-term port efficiency.
Previous Anti-Encroachment Measures
This is not the first time the DPA has undertaken a large-scale clearance initiative. Officials noted that last year alone, approximately 200 acres of encroached land were successfully cleared across the port area. These sustained efforts reflect the port authority’s commitment to reclaiming and securing government land crucial for national maritime operations.
A Step Toward Order and Development
The latest demolition marks another strong message from the Deendayal Port Authority against illegal occupation of strategic port land. As Kandla continues to expand in terms of cargo handling and infrastructure development, ensuring a safe, secure, and unencumbered operational environment remains a priority.
