Kamarajar Port Limited Hosts DG Shipping and IOMOU Delegates for Port State Control Training Mission

Kamarajar Port Limited (KPL) hosted delegates from the Directorate General of Shipping and the Indian Ocean Memorandum of Understanding (IOMOU) Port State Control (PSC) team as part of the Second Expert Mission Training Programme on Port State Control. The initiative marked a significant step toward strengthening maritime safety oversight and regulatory compliance in India’s port ecosystem.

Field Visit Focused on Academic and Practical Enrichment

The field visit, held on February 17, was designed to provide both academic enrichment and practical exposure to participants. The programme aimed to strengthen professional competencies in Port State Control procedures and regulatory compliance frameworks.

This expert mission forms part of broader efforts to enhance inspection standards and reinforce adherence to international maritime conventions. By integrating classroom-level discussions with real-time operational exposure, the training ensured a comprehensive understanding of PSC functions.

Hands-On Vessel Inspections at KPL

During the visit, delegates conducted detailed inspections of two vessels berthed at Kamarajar Port Limited. The exercise provided hands-on experience in evaluating:

  • Shipboard safety measures

  • Statutory certifications

  • Crew compliance standards

  • Operational best practices

These inspections were carried out in line with global maritime safety norms, ensuring alignment with international frameworks that govern shipping safety and environmental protection.

Strengthening Compliance Through Knowledge Exchange

The interaction between port officials and PSC inspectors created a valuable platform for knowledge exchange. Discussions centered around:

  • Inspection protocols

  • Risk assessment methodologies

  • Emerging compliance requirements under international maritime regulations

Delegates from the Directorate General of Shipping and the Indian Ocean Memorandum of Understanding engaged in constructive dialogue to address evolving challenges in maritime governance and ship inspections.

Such collaborative engagements play a crucial role in harmonizing inspection procedures across ports and enhancing regional cooperation in maritime safety oversight.

Commitment to a Safe and Compliant Maritime Ecosystem

KPL reiterated its commitment to supporting capacity-building initiatives and fostering a safe, secure, and compliant maritime ecosystem aligned with international standards. By hosting expert missions and facilitating structured training programmes, the port continues to position itself as a proactive stakeholder in strengthening Port State Control mechanisms.

As maritime trade continues to expand, initiatives like the Second Expert Mission Training Programme highlight the importance of robust inspection systems, continuous learning, and international cooperation in ensuring safety, environmental protection, and operational excellence across global shipping networks.
