Kaladan Project to be operational by 2027: Sonowal

A Step Toward Seamless Connectivity

In a major boost to India’s regional connectivity, Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently announced that the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) a strategic initiative between India and Myanmar is expected to be fully operational by 2027. This ambitious project is set to bridge the long-standing gap between India's Northeast region and the mainland, enhancing both economic activity and strategic connectivity.

First Cargo Movement Sets the Momentum

The project made significant progress when the first cargo shipment sailed from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata to the Sittwe Port located in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. This marks the beginning of a new trade route that will strengthen India's outreach to Southeast Asia and beyond.

Strategic Importance of Sittwe Port

The Sittwe Port, developed under a bilateral framework agreement between India and Myanmar, is a key component of the Kaladan project. It connects to Paletwa in Myanmar via an inland waterway. From Paletwa, a road extends to Zorinpui in Mizoram, India, creating a multimodal corridor linking the Bay of Bengal to the Northeastern states.

Additionally, the Sittwe Port’s proximity to Teknaf Port in Bangladesh   just 60 nautical miles away   adds another layer of strategic value. Goods can be quickly shipped from Kolkata to Sittwe, then transferred to Teknaf, and transported by road to Sabroom in Tripura, which is just 300 km away.

Transforming Northeast into a Trade Hub

According to Minister Sonowal, once the project is completed, the distance between Aizawl and Kolkata will be reduced by 700 kilometers, significantly cutting down logistics time and cost. “Transportation should be used to bring about transformation,” he quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi as saying, emphasizing that the Northeast should be developed into South Asia’s commercial hub.

Massive Infrastructure Investment

Sonowal also revealed that the Indian government is investing Rs 1,000 crore in constructing the canals as part of the Kaladan project, while other associated works are being carried out by collaborating agencies. The initiative is being constructed as a “Friendship Project” between India and Myanmar, reflecting the close bilateral ties and mutual vision of regional growth.

Looking Ahead

The Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project is not just a corridor for cargo; it’s a symbol of transformation, regional cooperation, and a shared vision for economic integration. Once operational, this corridor will not only enhance India’s Act East Policy but also open up new avenues for trade, tourism, and investment across the Northeastern region.

The completion of this project by 2027 could truly redefine logistics, regional development, and India's strategic position in Southeast Asia.
