IndiGo becomes first airline in India to introduce Airbus A321XLR in its fleet – Key features and other details

India’s aviation sector marked a major milestone as IndiGo received its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The arrival of this next-generation aircraft signals a new chapter for long-haul, cost-efficient international travel from India.

First A321XLR lands in Delhi
On Wednesday, 7 January 2026, IndiGo announced that its first Airbus A321XLR successfully landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. With this delivery, IndiGo becomes the first Indian airline to add the A321XLR to its fleet, reinforcing its leadership position in the country’s aviation market.

The aircraft is set to operate on upcoming non-stop international routes, connecting Mumbai to Athens from 23 January 2026 and Delhi to Athens from 24 January 2026. Both routes will be operated three times a week, offering passengers direct connectivity between India and Europe.

What is the Airbus A321XLR
The Airbus A321XLR is a long-range variant of the A321neo family, designed to unlock mid- to long-haul routes with a single-aisle aircraft. With an impressive range of up to 8,700 km and enhanced fuel efficiency, the aircraft allows airlines to operate longer routes while maintaining lower operating costs.

IndiGo’s A321XLR features a dual-class cabin configuration with 12 IndiGoStretch seats and 183 economy seats. Both cabins are fitted with RECARO seating, designed to provide greater comfort and an improved onboard experience, especially on long-duration international flights.

Fleet expansion and route plans
IndiGo has placed a firm order for 40 Airbus A321XLR aircraft, with nine deliveries scheduled in 2026. After the initial deployment on non-stop services to Athens, the remaining aircraft will be inducted on existing and upcoming international routes, including destinations such as Istanbul and Bali. This expansion will help IndiGo steadily grow its international footprint.

Leadership views on the milestone
Commenting on the induction, Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, said the airline is honoured to be the first in India to welcome the Airbus A321XLR. He highlighted that the advanced capabilities of the aircraft will help redefine long-haul travel for Indian passengers and enable the airline to reach newer global markets while strengthening India’s role in international aviation.

Elbers also emphasised IndiGo’s collaboration with Airbus and RECARO, noting that the combination of next-generation aircraft performance, improved fuel efficiency, and a thoughtfully designed cabin will deliver a comfortable and reliable onboard experience.

Airbus perspective on India’s aviation growth
Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director of Airbus India and South Asia, described the arrival of the first A321XLR as a proud moment for Indian aviation. He stated that the aircraft opens up mid- to long-haul routes that were previously not viable with single-aisle aircraft.

According to Westermeier, the A321XLR will act as a bridge connecting Indian cities to new global destinations, supporting IndiGo’s international growth and contributing to India’s ambition of becoming a global aviation hub.

A new era for long-haul travel from India
With the induction of the Airbus A321XLR, IndiGo is set to transform international connectivity from India. The aircraft’s long range, fuel efficiency, and passenger-focused cabin design position the airline to expand globally while keeping fares competitive, marking a significant step forward for India’s aviation industry.
