India, Maersk launch Nation’s first Maritime Simulation Centre at AMET Chennai

India has taken a historic step in advancing its maritime education sector with the launch of the country’s first Maritime Simulation Centre at the AMET Knowledge Park near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Inaugurated in 2025, the state-of-the-art facility is the result of a joint initiative between the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) and global shipping leader A.P. Moller-Maersk.
A Landmark Collaboration
The project, developed at an investment of ₹13.5 crore, has been largely supported by the A.P. Moller Foundation. It marks the continuation of a strong 25-year partnership between AMET and Maersk, dedicated to shaping the future of maritime education in India.
Advanced Training with Global Standards
The simulation centre integrates cutting-edge technologies designed to provide cadets with hands-on training in navigation, operations, and safety procedures. By replicating real-world scenarios in a risk-free environment, the facility ensures that Indian seafarers are equipped with skills aligned to global shipping requirements and international safety benchmarks.
AMET highlighted that such collaborations are vital to preparing manpower for India’s blue economy, while also ensuring graduates remain competitive in an evolving global maritime landscape.
AMET’s Role in Maritime Education
Established in 1993, AMET remains India’s only maritime university. It trains over 4,000 students annually and has produced more than 27,000 graduates to date. Its alumni occupy leadership positions across global shipping companies, further underlining its role as a powerhouse of maritime education and training.
Maersk’s Commitment to Innovation
For Maersk, this initiative aligns with its strategy of building sustainable supply chains and investing in human capital. The company, which has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, views the centre as a step towards driving innovation, resilience, and sustainability in international trade.
Transforming India’s Maritime Future
The new Maritime Simulation Centre is set to revolutionize seafarer training in India. By giving cadets the opportunity to rehearse complex operational and navigational challenges before they set sail, it enhances both safety and efficiency in maritime operations.
Industry experts believe the centre will not only boost India’s global competitiveness in maritime education but also strengthen its standing on the international stage as a hub for skilled seafarers.
