Introduction

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), a common yet often overlooked digestive disorder, is fast becoming a concern among young adults due to unhealthy dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Addressing this growing health issue, a panel of leading gastroenterologists emphasized the need for early diagnosis and proactive lifestyle changes to prevent severe complications during a recent webinar titled ‘GERD-free Living: From Burn to Balance’. This was the final session in the 15-part series under the ‘Healthy India, Happy India’ initiative by Naruvi Hospitals in collaboration with The Hindu.

Understanding GERD and Its Impact

Dr. Jacob Raja A.S., Consultant at Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, explained the role of the esophageal sphincter – the valve between the esophagus and the stomach – in maintaining digestive health. When this sphincter weakens, it allows stomach acids to flow back into the esophagus, a condition known as Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER). When GER becomes frequent and causes persistent heartburn, chest pain, or difficulty in swallowing, it can lead to GERD – a chronic condition that adversely affects one’s quality of life, work, and sleep.

He noted that globally, one in five individuals suffer from GERD, with higher prevalence in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. While India reports relatively fewer cases, there is a noticeable rise among the youth, largely attributed to poor lifestyle and eating habits.

Diagnosis and Lifestyle Management

Dr. E. Rabindranath, another consultant from Naruvi Hospitals, emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and consulting a doctor to rule out other conditions that mimic GERD, such as heart disease, esophageal disorders, anxiety, and panic attacks.

He laid out simple yet effective lifestyle changes to manage and prevent GERD:

  • Quit smoking and alcohol consumption

  • Avoid spicy and fatty foods, as well as late-night meals

  • Practice portion control and maintain a healthy weight

  • Combat sedentary routines by staying active

  • Manage stress through relaxation techniques

Additionally, Dr. Rabindranath recommended practical tips like elevating the head during sleep, maintaining a gap of three to four hours between dinner and bedtime, sleeping on the left side, and wearing loose-fitting clothes during physical activities.

Medical Interventions and Prevention of Complications

Dr. A.C. Arun, Clinical Lead of Gastroenterology at Lily Mission Hospital, Madurai, spoke about the role of diagnostic tools like endoscopy in detecting complications early. If left untreated, GERD can progress to more serious conditions such as:

  • Esophageal ulcers and strictures

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Vomiting of blood

  • Barrett’s Esophagus, a precancerous condition

He highlighted that medications, endoscopic procedures, and, in some cases, minor surgeries can effectively treat GERD and prevent these complications.

Conclusion

The expert panel reiterated a clear message: early detection coupled with simple lifestyle adjustments can significantly reduce the risk of severe GERD-related health issues. As part of the Healthy India, Happy India initiative, the session urged individuals to take proactive steps toward digestive health – not just to alleviate symptoms, but to ensure long-term wellness.

By staying informed and making mindful choices, GERD can be effectively managed, ensuring a healthier, more balanced life.
