'I thought 199 was chaseable': Ajinkya Rahane slams openers after KKR's crushing defeat against GT

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced a tough evening at the Eden Gardens as they fell short by 39 runs against Gujarat Titans (GT), continuing their rollercoaster ride in this season’s IPL. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane didn’t hold back at the post-match presentation, candidly admitting that the top-order batting woes were a recurring problem, and once again, played a major role in their defeat.
A Promising Chase That Lost Steam
Chasing a challenging yet achievable target of 199, KKR could only muster 159/8 in their 20 overs. Rahane believed the total was within reach, especially after the bowlers put up a valiant show to drag the team back into contention.
"I thought 199 was chaseable, we came back into the game really well with the ball. You expect good opening starts, but that's what we're struggling with throughout the tournament. We need to learn as quickly as possible," Rahane said.
Top-Order Troubles Continue
KKR’s opening partnerships have been under the spotlight this season, with a consistent lack of momentum at the top hampering their chases and setting back their progress in crucial fixtures. Monday’s match was no different, and Rahane’s frustration was evident as he emphasized the need for quick corrections in the batting unit—particularly the middle overs, where the team continues to lose its grip.
"The pitch was a little slow, but when we were bowling, we thought something below 210 or 200 would be good. We need to bat better, especially in the middle overs. We need better opening starts, no complaints from our bowlers. Every game they're improving," he added.
Fielding Woes Add to KKR's Woes
Another key area Rahane highlighted was the fielding department. He noted that small lapses on the field cost them dearly in the form of extra runs—something that could prove decisive in tight encounters.
"Fielding is something in our control. If you can save 15-20 runs, that's always better. It's all about attitude, but the guys are working hard," Rahane remarked.
Focus on Positivity and Bravery
Ending on a reflective yet motivating note, Rahane shared his belief in the importance of mindset in the T20 format. He urged his team to play brave cricket, forget past failures, and embrace a positive outlook.
"This format is about being brave as a batter. You can't think too much about the past—just learn from the mistakes and take your chances, have a positive mindset. If you think about getting out, you will get out. Instead, you should think about scoring runs or hitting boundaries."
